Get rust off Stillen Y pipte?

Hey, I purchased a Stillen Y pipe and a random technology CAT, used from E-bay. It has some rust on it, metal polish doesn't seem to do anything, what would I need to buy at a store like home depot to get the rust off? Thanks for your help

Re: Get rust off Stillen Y pipte?

You will need to sand some of the rust off. You could then coat the area with high temperature spray paint from an auto parts store.

This thread is long dead, but it's better late than never I suppose...
To answer your question, no, not if the clear coat used is the right one. There are high temperature rust proofing sprays availible. I have a couple little spots beginning to form on my Y-pipe and was just curious if others had the problem. Stainless Steel, more like Stainless ****. Just one more reason not to do business with $tealin...

I wouldn't worry about the rust. First of all, it's only surface rust, and unless you have a show car, I wouldn't worry about it. And if you really did have a show car, you'd have it polished or chromed. Secondly, exhausts rust out from the inside, NOT the outside. So if you think it's bad on the outside, imagine the inside.

Stillen y-pipes have never been made of stainless steel, their all mild steel and the newer ones are mild stell with a ceramic coating.

Use VHT Brand Hi Temp Black Paint. Follow directions for 3 layers. The Y-Pipe will last longer than the car.
I have this can of Red High Temperature Paint that was only $5 so I figured why not, I'll find something to use it on. My car has a Red/Black thing going on. I was thinking of using it for this, now that I've found the rust specs. I think I'll wait a bit though. The specs were really not worth the trouble. Yet.

Just make sure the label says its for exhaust piping, manifolds etc, otherwise you'll have a pleasant burning scent from your car.
And along with that burning scent I'd have to get STUPID tattooed across my forehead.

I'm sure it could... But it won't be necessary since the stuff is good up to 900 degrees. The black was good up to 1300 but I wanted red and 900 is plenty fine for a N/A. Perhaps this summer when it's a little warmer and I'm looking to kill time I'll drop the exhaust and do this... And I guess I could also use it on the Variable Intake Manifold if Cheston's deal works out? Ah, life is good sometimes...
