Obd scanners
Are all obd 2 scanners the same? Been looking on eBay for one to keep with my car in order to keep up with CEL when they come up any recommendations? Budget around $50.
The ones I have my eyes on are BIg Banana BB600 and Autel MS309.

A simple scanner will read and clear basic engine codes.
More advanced units will show live data.
Professional units will get into most other systems including transmission, ABS, SRS and BCM modules.
You do realize you can read any engine code for free with the use of a small screw driver?

I have a bluetooth ELM327 module from ebay, and use a free app on my android based phone to check and clear codes, as well as see some live date like mpg, engine load, air/fuel mixture, RPMs, etc...
total cost was like 30 bucks and I can reset the check engine light immediately after it pops, even while driving

I've got this one:

I know it's a bit above what you said your budget is but I got it on sale at Advance Auto a while back for $99 and it does pretty much everything.
It includes a programming/reprogramming CD and USB cable as well.

There are five different signal protocols that an OBDII car may use to communicate through its port. My scanner that I bought in 2009 can only speak VPW, PWM, and ISO 9141. I've never been able to get it to work with a car newer than 2003, since it doesn't speak CAN.

I got off my butt and plugged the scanner into my 2010 Lexus IS. Never tried it before. The scanner worked. Screen said it was using the CAN protocol.
So instead of buying a new scanner, I'll buy some of my favorite beverage.
