Don't waste your time. Some people say it doesn't even work well. In any case, in the event of a flash flood, just don't drive you car into those deep water pools. It's that easy. I've personally only seen a flash flood where I stopped and thought: "that there puddle would be bad for my CAI..." Luckily, I wasn't going in that direction but you get my point...

AEM has a video of running an NSX at full throttle with the filter submerged (!!) and the bypass valve works like a charm. If I had a CAI I would definitely buy one of these, it's cheap insurance.

I'd like to see that. You have a link/website?

I've seen the video and read the article in the I believe Sept or October issue of Sport Compact Mag. It did as the previous link stated. They put an AEM CAI on an Nsx and put a small fish tank next to the car. They put the car on a dyno and they extended the CAI outside the car for the demo. The filter was totally submerged inside the full fish tank and the water even rose up the intake, which was clear for demo purposes, but never reached anywhere near the valve and even better the engine. As the gentleman states, it's very cheap insurance and convinience since I wouldn't have to worry about much once installed. I doubt I would ever need it, but better pay $40 bucks than the price of a new engine.

Don't know where the video went, but you can definitely get the idea from those pictures.

and once u have it installed just tell people who do not know what there talking about it is a supercharger, no one messed with me for about 2 months, i just showed them the aem bypass said that was the turbine and the compressor was down through the hole of the cai. The sad thing is people really believed me, plus with the saund the CAI makes and that little wistle at low rpms, people were sold!

I'm not sure how good the splash guarding is on the Gen4's, but at least on Accord V6's the AEM bypass valve for the CAI is a *complete* waste of money. AEM states that you'll lose 2-3 HP on their own site from installing the bypass valve (because of greater turbulence), but that's the amount of power that you'd gain over an under-hood intake so the net effect is that you pay more for nothing.

But again, that's my Accord V6 knowledge. I'm not sure how well that applies to Maxima's, but this bypass valve hype is more to just get you to give AEM more money and not necessarily because you really need it.

newbie-to-4th-gen question: Does AEM even make intakes for Maxima's? I didn't see any listed on their site specifically for the Maxima.

I don't know where the filter is on the Accord, but I would want a bypass valve on my car just in case, even at a 2hp loss. AEM doesn't make an intake for our cars, but the bypass valve can be put on any intake of the correct diameter.

im pretty sure many of you already know so im not trying to flame but for those that dont know already, the AEM Bypass Valve is to prevent hydrolock. Hydrolock happens when the filter is completely submerged, there are other ways for it to happen, it may not have to be completely submerged but thats how it works. Unless you drive across rivers, or live in an area with rain all year round and round the clock flooding, i think its a waste of money. So many people that i know think that it helps a lot, and they think that u can get hydrolock from driving on wet roads. Listen to these guys on the forum, they know what their talking about.
peace

i know that it may be extreme that i would need to use the bypass however i could be somewhere, in another state or town where there is a flood in the road and my car is exspected to cruise through. I just never want to have to worry, in the northeast on the shore nasty stuff can happen. I'm not sure about that turbulent flow it might have some effect but usually the manifolds are disigned to increase laminar flow when air passes through. I would be interesed to see how it changes the air flow, maybe we need to install a tornado?

bypass

I keep hearing everyone talking about flash floods?

i live in nyc. and every time we get heavy rain the fdr drive floods
in some spots more than enough water to get into your cai & the cross bonx exspressway does the same thing. there both full of little dips that dont seem that deep when there dry.
every driven on the L.I.E during the rain and a car comming the other way hits a puddle you feel like you just got hit by a six foot wave! city highways in ny flood out all the time!!and lots of times you cant tell how deep it is until your in it
I have never been in a crash or had a car stolen but i till have an aftermarket alarm & pay insurance! $40 for peace of mind!
thats a bargina it

Re: bypass

i live in texas and we hardly ever get rain, if there ever is a serious chance of heavy rain, i would just remove the pipe and attach the filter to the upper part, i know some of yall are thinking wouldnt you get tired of switching it? but i wouldnt have to more than once and maybe twice at the extreme per year, and btw aem does make an intake for our car, it looks kinda like an intercooler, check old posts in the gen. forum
