Squeaking noise when I hit the brakes, and brake light on

I'm the owner of a '98 maxima. Last week while driving I heard a squeaking noise whenever I would hit the brakes. Today when I turned the car on, the brake light on the dashboard went on. I was just wondering A. What the problem is and B. Is the car safe to drive? I'm in college so I don't drive more than 20 minutes. Thankyou!

Welcome to the Org.

First of all, "Help" is not an appropriate thread title. Please be more descriptive in the future

I've re titled your thread

Secondly, you posted in the wrong forum. This forum is for garage related stuff. I have moved the thread to the right forum.

The noise you hear is mostly likely the squeak sensors telling you to change your brake pads. They're low and worn out. If you keep driving on them, you'll eventually hear grinding (metal on metal) and will damage your rotors.

Pop the hood and look at the brake reservoir. Chances are it's low since your pads are worn out (as the pads wear out, the level of the fluid drops) and thus triggered the brake light.
