Well F**k! I Learned Something New and Re-learned A Hard Lesson ...

The lesson re-learned?

Never let anyone do a job for you that you can do yourself.

I got lazy. I admit it. I was just being lazy and let a local shop install front axles I'd had stored in the back of my truck for a little over a year.

The axles are fine but G*d Dammit if they didn't "F" my driver's side wheel bearing.

I heard the grumbling on the drive home from the shop but for some reason placed the blame on a non-OEM axle.

I drove on it for three days and decided I'd better investigate.

Sure as sh*t ... not even close the proper torque on the spindle nut.

I torqued it down to 200 ft/lbs which improved things but there's still a grumble.

So, by the time my $350 axle install is all tolled it gonna have cost about $470.

Never let anyone do a job for you that you can do yourself.

That's free advice from a lazy dumb-sh*t.

The something new?

My key fob won't lock my car if the car is running.

After coming up on 16 years of ownership, I just today realized that with the key in the ignition and/or the car running, my key fob won't lock my car.

Huh ... never realized that till now.

Thanks for sharing your story. It's a good reminder to do our work ourselves, when possible.

The old adage holds true here, "If you want something done right, do it yourself"

That's why I do all my work if I have the tool or can rent it for a good price, that way you use care and not break other things while fixing something totally different.

I removed it from my ring.

It was cold as hell out and I thought I might leave my locked car running as I ran in to get my Subway.

ummmm, is that how you discovered that you can't leave key in ignition and lock car while it's running??

Yep ...

Apparently the first time I'd tried it in 16 years.

Go figure.

You need an aftermarket alarm with remote start installed in order to do that. I have this, and use this feature from time to time. After you press a certain button on the remote, it allows you to take the keys with you, arm the car etc while leaving the motor running.

Actually probably not a bad idea. Not only myself but im sure many others have locked their keys in the car without thinking or just having an off day and if it's not running and the doors lock your screwed lol. Atleast if you keep a fob seperate from your key ring you can atleast unlock the doors if you do ever leave the keys in the car.

or, make a spare key and carry it with you at all times cause you already know the car likes to play games and magically "lock" all 4 doors and then have you stand there staring and cursing " why did'nt i make a spare key like max ride did?"

I do the same thing too, on really cold days where I got to run in somewhere really quick I would use the remote start on my alarm and leave it running then lock the car.

It is not exactly a feature that you HAVE to have but it saves a few seconds and keeps the car toasty.

As the WIZ and LEO stated I use my remote starter to keep my MAX running with the keys removed when I quickly need to run into a store. It not only keeps the MAX warmer in the winter but it puts more life to the battery.
