97 Maxima 5 Speed Crankshaft Position Sensors

Went to Advance to have my CE codes read, and got crankshaft position sensor and evap codes. They said the evap could be related to the EGR, but I'm more concerned with the CP sensor (s). I don't know if my car has 1 or 2 sensors or where they're located. Can anyone help me out with this?

There are 2 crankshaft sensors on the engine. One is used to sense the flywheel teeth and generate the ignition spark and timing. Nissan calls it CKPS(POS).

The other sensor is by the oil filter sensing the harmonic balancer. This sensor is used to determine TDC of the crankshaft. Nissan calls it CKPS(REF).

These 2 sensors have different check engine codes. The flywheel sensor code is P0335. The harmonic balancer sensor code is P1335.

Try cleaning the sensor first. Crud does build up on the tips and interfere with the operation. But if you have to buy one, GET A NISSAN ONE. The sensors from local parts stores seem to cause intermittent problems.

I wish the guy had told me the exact codes. He wouldn't let me use the obd scanner, for some reason. He did give me prices on the sensors, 60 to 90 a pop. I'd rather clean them first.

Is the one in the back of the motor hard to get to?

The sensor on the flywheel is is near the bottom of the bell housing while the sensor for the harmonic balancer is on the oil pan directly below the harmonic balancer. You will have to jack up the car to get to either of them and will probably have to take off the splash shield to get to the crankshaft sensor.

Why don't you go to another store and have the codes read. That first place was being deceptive and sounds like a place to stay away from. None of the stores by me let me use the scanner, a store employee does it. But they always show as well as tell me what the codes are.

I plan to. I thought it was odd that I didn't get a code for the o2 sensor that's completely disconnected. I also thought it was odd that i wasnt allowed to use the scanner myself, when Advance normally lets you as long as you let them hold your license. But I just landed a job at Napa, and when I return to work on Tuesday I will use their scanner.
