Seatbelt question

On my 96 Max, the driver side seatbelt doesn't retract automatically. I pretty much have to wind it back in. Any suggestions on what might be causing this, do I need to replace my seatbelt there?

Thanks

Mine is getting that way. I wonder if the retracting mechanism is getting dirty or just starting to wear out? Anyone else?

Yeah, I have the same problem. I cleaned mine and there a lot better. Just use a stong household cleaner. Even if they don't look dirty they are, plus it helps lubricate the belt. They usually start to bind at the top mount. Anyway, just a thought.

If the seat belt still doesn't work after treatment, one can ask Nissan to replace it for free. It's a lifetime warranty and it's tranferrable, unless the failure is caused by something like an accident. I'm nearly positive.

The car has been in two accidents, so I think it might be failing b/c of that althought I haven't taken it apart and don't know whether it's worth it or not. Interesting enough, the passenger side doesn't seem to bind at all.

What retracts them internally? Is there a spring or something that could be stretched out from use?
