Well a semi positive update. I replaced the fuel pump, removed and cleaned the cam sensor and both crank sensors. Before these items it would crank and not start at all. Now it starts but will only stay started if i keep hitting the gas and I also noticed the rpm would stay at 8 the whole time. Going to check codes again tomorrow and see if it finally tells me something. At this point I think it is a sensor but we will see.

Have my 1996 Maxima I got very cheap as it needed work but it did start and drive.

I replaced front and back gasket seals and seals for spark plugs. I replaced spark plugs and coils and also the knock sensor. Put it all back together and now I have a crank but no start issue.

I cannot figure out the issue at all. Tried to jump it in case battery had drained some when out while working and same issue.

I took a few things back off and noticed this connector, not connected but I never removed it unless I knocked it out during my work I did. It runs off the harness for the coil connectors and near the battery. I am wondrering what connector it is and is it maybe the cause of my no start/spark to the plugs? I also for the life of me see no place that it may have come from?? It is just odd to me. It is in the photo.

Please any help would be so appreciated, I just wanna get her started and drive her again.

Thanks

Mike

Mystery loose connector
Update, car will start now and will run, have driven it around some. The issue now is that if I have to come to a stop it will stall out. At first it will stall quickly, after about 10 minutes of drive time it will stall out after about half a minute. Also, the braking is extremely hard now. Any further suggestions? I feel so close to having it useable every day but not there just yet.

sounds like vacuum leak; check for vacuum leaks esp to brake booster.

interesting that the brakes appear to be loosing power assist.

surban1 might be on the right track. It is possible that the vaccumm leak is in the brake booster. Replacing it might solve the issue.

You might test this theory by removing the vacuum hose from the power brake unit. Then shove something in the hose to seal it off. then tighten the hose clamp.

once you do this, you will not have brake assist. Drive the car as usual. If the stalling problem stops, replace the brake booster.

Please tighten the hose clamps on the brake booster line before you do anything else. That alone might solve the problem.

I didn't know that my positive terminal was burnt until I went to check the grounds when I had my intermittent no start/long crank issues. The ends on the positive harness were fried too. Had to get new ones.

Update: We are running well again

After all the work it is now running pretty smooth.

All things done to it:

Valve cover and spark plug seals

New spark plugs and coils

New fuel pump

New PCV valve

New negative batter cable and the old one was shot to hell

Cleaned most of the grounds

Cleaned cam sensor, both crank sensors, MAF and replaced knock sensor.

Oil change

Today, I took off the idle valve and body throttle and cleaned them like hell. The throttle body like the rest of the car was caked in grime since this thing was neglected and sat for a year as well.

It is now running pretty smooth and no more CEL and it brakes normal as well again.

Thanks everyone for all your help with this. I am sure I will be back on here since this thing is 20 years old and has 195k miles on it hahaha Just hoping it will play nice for a few months at least until it needs anymore work.

Now that you gave the car the deferred maintenence it needed,
It's likely to run quite well for years, not months.

As with any car with 200k miles, anything can happen.
My ride is at 205k k miles and has been maintained well.
The car can take long trips without worry.

Maintenance is the key.

Absolutely agree. When I bought it I honeslty knew zip about cars so I have learned a ton regardless of the outcome. I also know how to maintain it moving forward now, poor car was just pretty much left for dead so hopefully a breath of new life and care is all it needed. Including purchase
Price I am only about $1,000 into it so if it runs for a couple years I would say that it a hell of a bargain 😉

Imagine running it five more years or 50k more miles. Many of these cars do that.
