Replacement Door Handle

Some months ago we started having trouble with the 99 model's door lock.

The lock tumbler started shifting back into the door making it impossible to unlock the driver side door using a key. I thought something was loose.

Last weekend I took the door apart and found the plastic door handle was cracked around the bolt that screws into it handle body near the lock opening. I thought the design was weak since it relied on a metal stud bolt that screwed in to threaded plastic mounting. It was clear that I needed a new door handle. I managed to super glue the metal stud into the plastic mounting to get it back together and hoped for the best.

The following Monday I tried to order a new handle from dealer site. In the process of searching for the best price, I found John Lee Nissan's online store. So I ordered the part on the spot. The dealer price was $72.35 + shipping that brought the order to $89 and change. Not a cheap part -- but a part that I didn't see as having an alternative at the time.

So the next day I received an email that Nissan has discontinued the door handle part. My chances of finding a black door handle in salvage yard that isn't already cracked or soon to crack are not good in this part of the country.

So I searched on the Nissan part number and found the part at an online store named 1A Auto for $58.95 with free shipping. The price seemed ok so I ordered it on Wednesday afternoon. The part arrived today. That was fast for free shipping.

So when I opened the box, I was pleasantly surprised to see the replacement uses metal for the mounting bolt holes instead of plastic. It looks like a higher quality part than the original that cracked and failed.

The part is a Dorman. No surprise there. I've had excellent luck with Dorman parts in the past. Now I've learned that Dorman part are not cheap. The quality seems to be good and the company appears to be very well managed.

So here's a picture of the replacement handle below.

The red Vs show the metal bolt mounting holes that were plastic on the original.

Rock auto also carries the dorman handles. 48 bucks for the fronts and 86 bucks for the rears. I am curious why the big diff in price front to rears

Good to know about Rock. It looks like the opposite between front and rear at 1A.

Here's a rear for $22.95.

Get a set of two rear handles for $34.95.
