possible diff bearing failure-not certain

I noticed that my driver axle is leaking at the seal, I replaced the seal and it still leaks. When I pulled the axle for the first time, I used a brass punch like 1/2" thick and a foot long, to apply pressure to the diff bearing and I couldn't see any play, but when the axle is in the transmission, I can apply pressure to the axle and it moves a bit. so I'm thinking the diff bearings but not certain because the diff won't move when using the brass punch, can the axle itself be loose in the diff perhaps? Is this a feasible theory? It's like 12 degreez out and my apartment garage is lacking in the accommodations dept. (no lighting, no heat) so I really hope I don't need to pull tranny.
