4th Gen Odometers obviously have problems

The daughter of a friend of mine has a '96 GXE 5 speed and the odometer just stopped working. I did a search and found MANY people with 4th Gens complaining about the same thing. Her daughter said that the dealer quoted her $850 to fix it!!

Has anyone with a '99 model (which has a digital odometer) had this problem...just curious.

I think the problems you found were more with the analog readout odometer. The numbers for the trip meter would get stuck instead of rolling over as it should. A reset usually fixed it, lined up the dials.

I don't think the digital readout odo had any problems.

I think it isn't a major problem ... just an inconvenience. Only happened to me once so I'm not worried.

My analog odometer has been working fine for 119K miles. In fact I'd probably pay someone to make it NOT work!

mine works on and off, from day to day. I searched and nobody had an easy fix. It seems that the plastic gears wear out, and it is expensive to get fixed. It is an inconvenience for me trying to do oil changes and tire rotations.

Try trading your car off with the odometer not working and see how much of a positive reaction you get.

The person I was referring to that has had this problem was thinking about trading off her Max.

98's have the digital odometer also. BTW never had a problem with mine. 78K. What you can do is leave it disabled until you are ready to sell the car, then get it fixed. As far as keeping ckeck for oil changes and stuff, intall an hour meter. Thats what they use in boats cause as we all know, they don't have odometers. When enough hours pass, you know to do maintenence. It's a more accurate way to measure usage on an engine anyway.
