o-ring on the motor oil dipstick?

Is there supposed to be an o-ring on the motor oil dipstick?
The dipstick on my Maxima does not inspire confidence when inserted, and over time I have found it allows a bit of oil mist to escape which in turn attracts all manner of dust.

There is no o-ring on the Maxima dipstick. If you think your DS is faulty, get another one from a junkyard.

No o-ring, but there is a rubber gromet below the handle, that gets inserted for a snug fit.

Wrap the narrow portion of the dipstick grommet (the portion that inserts into the dipstick orifice) with teflon tape to a thickness that makes a nice snug seal.

Then, simply keep and eye on it's condition and re-wrap when needed.

With all due respect, an 18 to 22 year old dipstick from a salvage yard going to be in similar condition.

Also, do not be tempted to install your own o-ring. It won't work and will cause more problems then it will solve ... believe me.

On the other hand it appears that new OEM dipsticks are available for about $18.00.

Thanks for the replies!
I could not find a suitable o-ring at O'reilly, so I used a bit of electrical tape. I wanted to use heatshrink but I didn't have any big enough.
