Hi:

I have Maxima '96, ~243k miles, auto transmission. For the last week, transmission behaved funny but I could not clearly sense what was exactly wrong. Yesterday, it stopped shifting up:

o press the gas pedal, car starts moving;

o shifts 1st, 2nd, then don't shifts;

o pressing gas pedal just increases RPM;

o rear shift works;

o I had to put it into D2, then it does not even try and allows me to drive with ~40MPh and ~3000RPM.

What could be possible remedies to try beyond something major (like replacing this AT with used one)? I am not a mechanic, cannot do it myself, major expensive job (more than $300-400) is not an option, but I would like to know if I can ask my mechanic to check some smaller stuff first.

Most automatic transmission shops will do a quick but limited check for free. Based on that, they may need to do more extensive diagnostics that they would charge for.

Good luck on the $300-$400. Automatic transmissions are expensive to repair. Even buying a used transmission for that small of an amount is doubtful and then you have the installation charges.

 

Are you saying the engine won't rev above 3000 rpm? If so, the MAF is suspect.

No, it goes above OK. I am putting it in D2, then I can accelerate to ~40MPh, and it shows ~3000RPM while doing that. Pushing gas pedal adds RPMs, but not much speed.

If I put it in D, then it revs up to 4000-5000 when I push gas pedal, but speed stays at ~20-30MPh because it is not shifting up.

I checked the AT fluid level - looks OK to me, color is also good.
