Word To The Wise ... A/C System Glitch
Here’s a little heads up tid-bit for us owners of 19+ year old cars …
I’ve been tracking down some A/C failure issues over the past couple of weeks culminating, to my disappointment in myself, in a trip to a local shop.
Based on the input I received from the shop, my primary failure is related to a long-term little glitch.
Apparently, over the decades, right back there at the firewall where the A/C liquid line exits the evaporator and runs super close to the power steering hose, my liquid line and PS hose have actually been in contact.
This long term contact has apparently resulted in the development of a pin-hole in the liquid line, hence my A/C system failure.
I pulled out my inspection mirror and flash light over the week end and confirmed that there’s damage to the A/C line.
The rubber power steering hose hasn’t been damaged on accounta the contact was with the corrugated aluminum heat insulation that surrounds the PS hose at that location. However, the heat insulation has been worn through at that spot.
If anyone cares to heed and any advice … just have a quick check of your PS hose to ensure there’s adequate separation between the hose and the A/C line. Also, adding a piece of slit fuel line to surround and protect the A/C line would be a good idea as well.
I ordered a new liquid line from an Infiniti dealer here in FL but these lines are NLA for the Nissans … just an FYI.
And yes, I'm also replacing the accumulator and pressure switch.
