revved up the max while driving and.......

the rpm's went up to 7000 and i had to drop it in neutral so it would drop back down to normal. i initially revved it up in neutral and i noticed it kicked up a little, but it didn't kick up more than a little, second and third time it got stuck way up high and scared the $hit outta me, what's loose or needs cleaning? gas pedal switch screwed up? thanks- no codes btw

Look at the clamp on the rubber air boot where it attaches to the throttle body. Next, move the throttle through its whole range, from idle to wide open. It's possible that the clamp is catching on the throttle at some point. That holds its open.

the fix is to loosen the clamp, then rotate counter clockwise until it doesn't catch the throttle mechanism.

I had this happen to me when I was on the freeway, and couldn't pull over. I had a choice between wrecking the car or racing the engine at 7k, or shutting it off. Not fun.

thanks, had a brain fart on that one i hope that's the issue, certainly a bad design flaw

It can catch the throttle parts unless it's rotated CCW.

Life gets interesting when it does. Because it usually occurs when the gas pedal is down most of the way.

Wouldn't say it's a poor design.. I'm sure you've had the intake off before. It won't get caught up if your mindful of how the clamp is supposed to be put back.

it should've been a smaller opening for the maf boot, so it would'nt catch so easily. wouldn't have restricted air flow. obviously it's happened to a few people and i'm sure has caused an accident or 2 not knowing what it was. i knew what to do luckily.

Happened to me on my '95 when I was experimenting with different intake setups. After I changed my boxers and rotated the clamp, I decided to never touch the stock intake ever again.

The torsion spring which opens the butterflies gets stuck by itself, makes it slowly return. I apply WD40 every 6 months, it helps better gas pedal response.

Or you may have several floor carpets. It interferes gas pedal travel path.

When my incident happened, I found that the throttle mechanism had caught on the screw on the hose clamp.
