CAI finally received AND...

the damn thing came with some crappy generic cone filter, not a K&N filter like it was suppose to. Anyone else encounter this huge problem? I am assuming it is Place Racing's fault and not Greg's from custommaxima.com.
I am so ****ed right now I could explode. I've been waiting for the CAI for over a month and now I gotta wait to install it because the filter is a piece of junk.

Is it possible to install it and have them send you the right filter? That way it is in and when you get the new filter just swap it and send the bad one back.

I absolutely second this. I found out the hard way when I made the factory hose fit and when it came off my car would not idle. Went to auto part store and got 2 new ones and it has worked perfectly since. I know a guy who put clear "beer bong" type hoses and it works and looks good too...my 2 cents..

is a generic filter really that much worse than K&N? Like, for example, the one that came with my pop charger..

I just got my CAI in the mail today and have the same problem. They sent some bull$hit a** monsterflow filter. I was wondering where my K&N filter was too
I am wondering if the installation is at all harder on a 96? as opposed to 97+. Thanks

Crummy filter

I too received my PR CAI today, also with some crappy foam filter on it. Anybody contact PR yet to see what is up with this? All the pcitures on both Greg's site and the PR site show K&N filters...though the PR site doesn't advertise K&N filters anymore.

And oh yeah, I have a 97....what hoses will I need for this mess?

PR could have changed their filter

Anyway, I would just call up PR and check to see if they changed their filter.

Nope definately not a K&N. Looks nothing like a K&N. I have a K&N on my popcharger right now. This thing is black fowm with red plastic. Monsterfilter or some junk like that. Its a brand name, comes with a manual for cleaning the foam and everything, but its just very cheap looking and doesn't look like it will last very long.

Place Racing

Hey I e-mailed Place Racing tonight. If I don't hear back from them by tomorrow afternoon I will call them. I requested a K&N filter. I didn't pay the extra money for a PR CAI to get junk parts. I would suggest you other disgruntled patrons do the same (e-mail and/or call).

Lately Place Racing has been using the Monster filters. They have worked out a deal with them. It's actually a very nice filter, supposedly it flows better than a K&N. It's even more expensive. Typical K&N is like $35, these filters sell for $90+. It's just something new they're doing.

Yeah, supposedly mine was shipped yesterday. I too expect it to come with K&N, but if this new filter is better, that is great. Someone should confirm this. Also, if someone could hook us all up with the part number for those hoses or at least describe them, it would be great.

Ahh what a joke, I've been waiting for like a month 1/2 for my silver CAI, and to hear this now just makes me mad. What a joke.

dude, open your hood, you see the tb the the rubber section, then the plastic box? out of the box comes two hoses, get replacements for those two bc they will be too short

OK, nobody that spends money on a CAI is gonna want to hear this, but isn't the whole intake system heated? Therefore feeding it cold air doesn't matter because it gets heated up anyway.

I ordered the silver CAI from Greg on January 1, I just got it two days ago (Feb.5th). Can someone please comfirm if the filter it came with is better than a K&N or not? I dont wanna return it and have to wait longer if this filter will perform well.
Someone please post some info, Im sick of waiting for a response from Greg. Im gonna contact Place Racing right now....

you won't FEEL any differences between a K&N and a generic. not sure about the filter you guys are talking about, but K&N does make filters for other companies.(TenzoR for example)

if anyone cares the part number for the K&N that comes with the cai is RU-2820. you can get it @ kragen for 30bucks.

CAI

I put the Monster filter in today. PR tells me its better. At first I was skeptical, but it seems pretty good. PR told me it adds 4 hp more than the KN filter because it has some special fins or something that help it suck air in more efficiently. I guess I am happy with it, much better low end than the Stillen pop charger I removed, though the pop sounded a little better I think.

oh yeah

For all those concerned I got the stock hoses to work with the new CAI also, meaning obviously that I did not have to go buy new ones. Rotate the hoses, bend a bit and all is well. Just be sure not to kink the hoses.

Warpspeed CAI...

May be off topic, but a quick question for all of you. How does the Warpspeed CAI compare to the Place Racing CAI? Any differences other than Warpspeed being cheaper? Performance? Sound?

Just got a response from Greg about the filter that came with the PR-CAI. Here it is word for word:

"Anthony, you received the new Monster filter. It is very popular and many people are removing their K&N filters to add this one. the Monster filter is 100 times better then the K&N. It costs $50 more then the K&N and flows much better. The K&N is oiled which tends to leak oil into the engine causing damage. Trust me you got a better filter at no extra cost. I will be including info on this item on the place racing cai page soon. This filter may not look as nice as the K&N but you can't see it anyway. You can purchase the K&N filter someplace else and add it but you are only hurting yourself.

Thanks,
Greg

I am going to trust Greg on this one. After checking out the filter, I could see how it flows much better than the K&N, just looks cheap thats all. Tomorrow the CAI is going in baby!!

WSP uses a K&N filter......their website hasnt been updated though......soundwise i am pretty sure they make the same noise.....quality wise the WSP is just as good, dont let the cheaper price decieve you........performance - you'll prolly gain around 10 HP with the cai

In theory, keep in mind this is all theory. The oil may coat the MAF, and cause it to give bad readings, and be damaged. In practice though, you'd have to use like a gallon of oil on the filter to even do anything to the MAF. This is what I have been told by several people, and the theory is sound, but in reality, the amount of oil used on the K&N isn't nearly enough to cause any problems.
