Suspension Inquiry, please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (yes, I did research)
I have a suspension question.
I am ordering Enkei RS6 18" Rims for the '98 Max SE i'm getting soon. My question is what type of suspension to go with. One thing is mandatory, the rims and tires are being switched in the winter and the stocks are going back on because I live in s****y weathered Boston. I still have to watch out for potholes every 5 feet anyway.
I want to slam my car. Not to the ground but I don't really want any fender gap. I also want a good ride. I know it's going to be firm with 18's but I want the best ride with 18's. I will sacrifice performance for ride quality but I want 18's.
I've done some research but can't come up with a definitive answer here.
1. I see that Ground Control Coilovers are a good option. If I get coilovers, do I have to change anything else and what. Do I have to get any other items and do I have to install them immediately with the Coilovers or can I wait a bit? I think it's nice that I can adjust them up in the winter and slam it in the summer.
2. If I get Springs, what are the best kind for my purpose? Same for struts. I hear that KGB are the better for my needs. Only problem is in the winter, I will have a low car.
Is the Coilover ride that bad?
Also, what rims do you like better?
The RS6
Or the CDR9?
I like the RS6 better because the extended spokes make it look like a bigger wheel. I heard the CDR9 is hard to clean because of all the bolts....
Please help,
Thanks

I like the RS6's better. And if you get coilovers you will need new shocks, the stock ones won't last very long with coilovers, especially if you drop them way down. I also live near Boston...I went with Intrax/Tokico's. Not really a slammed look, but it did drop the car quite a bit (from the stock 4x4 look) and they haven't really given me any headaches in the snow and crappy weather. I also hear the GC coilovers have a tendency to be a bit noisy...that word came from a guy I know at Stillen. He didn't recommend them. I have read that Sprint springs drop the car 2 full inches. One more word of advice....If you are droping way down...don't go with Tokico's. They won't last.

Seriously though, if you want no fender gap, get Sprint springs, lower by 2 inches, and kyb agx struts... or consider the cattman coilovers, which u can control the height of, but they are mad expensive
Springs and Struts
My buddy went with Tokicos and Eibachs on his '95 SE. The drop was not too severe and it looks real good. The ride is still decent and the handling is at least 50% better. We do get a little inclement weather here in MD and it hasn't been a problem for him.
If you are going to be driving IN boston, I can tell you from experience that, driving with a car lowered 2" and 18's is going to be a disaster on Comm. Ave. Especially crossing the tracks. It's just a PITA. But I can deal. There is NO way to slam a Max and maintain ride quality on New England roads. So if you're prepared to deal with it, good luck. The best way is to get some cattman, JIC, or some other coilover system so you can raise and lower that car for the change of seasons.

First let me welcome you to this forum and I am also a member in Boston, MA.
You can run H&R spring and KYB AGX for everyday driving. If you want to get really low on the ride and don't want to spend over $1,200 for a coilover system then go with Ground Control coilovers and KYB AGX. This would be an ideal set up for the roads in Boston. Just be careful of the pot holes with those 18's. Lastly come join us in the NE forum so you can know when we will have a mini meet around the MA area.

Comm ave sucks... I go to BU so I am there often and I work in South Station and those roads suck.

Arent coilovers a *****
Hey I heard that with coilovers you can adjust the ride height of your car but supposedly to adjust it you have to get the car up on stands and get underneath the car and then after the car is riding at a different height you have to get it re-aligned. What companys make adjustable coilovers? Also if I wanted to raise my car up in the winter and lower it in the summer what process would I have to go through to do that?? I was just going to get H&R springs which only lower the car 1.3 and 1.4 inches but in the summer I would like an all out performance machine yet at the same time I need some ground clearence for snow. Especially seeing how next year my 95 Max SE will be up in NH with me at school. I was gonna get the KYB AGX struts though. Or I was gonna get Koni. Which strut is better? This is my first post and I am still learning so if I am way off on this just know it's because I am pretty new to mods.

Re: Re: Arent coilovers a *****
hey thats sounds chill to me. So can I choose what spring rate I want in the coilovers. I am looking to ultimatly achieve a car that can pull a .90 on a skidpad. I don't know if thats crazy but all I know is I want to smoke this cocky basterd in my school whose parents bought him an M3 I am also planning on putting a sway bar in the back and tower braces in front and back. My freind and I can install that stuff but if I go through with the struts and the coilovers I am gonna need to get that done in a shop. What am I lookin at for installation costs? Yeah I live in MA but I am like 10 mins away from NH. So would my car handle better with ground effects coilovers? or H&R lowering springs??

I did a lot of research on GC's and they are the way to go for coilovers.....
The M3 is tough. I am going to do mine in the spring/summer myself. If you want, we can hookup and get it done in a day...
I need to get a Maxima first... It'l be soon, I have my 18" OZ sittin in my kitchen with GC's and a Greddy Cat-back on order.
Anyway, let me know what you are looking for and I'll hook you up w/ my cousin.
My e-mail is fjc75@mediaone.net
Re: Re: Re: Re: Arent coilovers a *****
Sweet dude. I'll e-mail yah. If you have experience with aftermarket springs and struts then hey I'de be willing to help you out with your suspension if you help me out with mine. Than maybe after we could take it to the streets and play a little game of keep up on the best switchbacks we can find. Even though I have yet to find some REALLY nice switch backs in MA or NH. I don't have a maxima yet either but I am lookin for a 4th generation with a 5speed. I have already test driven a few 5 speeds and they are definatly quick already. I am just looking for a max with under 75K on it. I might SC the engine later but I think I will get a Qualife Diff first and some 17s or 18s.
