Hey

Was wondering if ya'll could help me out in figuring out why my engine makes this noise when I start it... I saw another thread that sounded just like the same problem I have, and it was the starter. Do you think that could be the problem, and that I need to change my starter?

If it sounds like a grinding noise that occurs immediately after releasing the starter key, then your starter needs to be replaced. The noise might last a few seconds. Each time you hear that grinding noise, the starter gear is grinding against your flywheel. So the problem should be fixed within a few months or so. I let my starter grind about 6 months before replacing the starter and my flywheel had a little damage (not much).

I replaced mine last summer (97 Maxima @56k miles). Autozone has lifetime warranty starters for $120. It was very easy to replace. It took about 1.5 hours or so. You might need a torque wrench to torque the bolts connecting the starter to engine.

The Nissan Dealer has a Nissan starter with a 1 year warranty (I think) for around $200-250. If you have the dealer do the labor, it might cost you around $300+.

 

try greasing it before you replace the whole unit. its on some motorev site, i'll look for the link now.

It sounds like a little high pitched squeal right after you start right? Same thing here, it was the starter. Put in an autozone special and all better.

 

On Mine right after it starts the Lifters knock for a second or two right after it turns over but before the RPM s go to 1100.
