High Mileage

Hey mates, do you think 300,000 miles is to much to buy a used 1998 maxima?

Would you say it's still to much? If it was say a Pontiac or Chrysler or even a bmw with 300,000 miles I wouldn't touch it with a 10foot pole, because they don't have good reliability.

It depends on how well it has been maintained over the years. Sone cars still could reach 400 miles.
Others will have major issues during the next year.

Have the car inspected by a good mechanic.

How much experience do you have with fixing old cars?

been building and rebuilding vehicles for many years now so I can get around a need to fix vehicle. If I need to replace engine and tyranny when it fails I will but rather not have to if i can get away with it for awhile. Ik that japanese cars are really good to go very high miles and some cars nowadays are hitting 1mil. I'd just like to get 450thou or 500though out of it if possible. I always wanted a 4th Gen. I'm looking at one for $1000usd. 282000miles. Just needs motor mounts and has small trans leak. Shifts good, runs smooth, sounds good.

A 1000 car that get's you from point a-b with No issues. Buy it and roll on and always look for rust, always. 4thgens in Factory form are decent drivers. Ide say for it to have 282k speaks to someones maintenance. Welcome.

guy was selling for 1k because come to find out, it was stuck in high gear (4th automatic). I bought it, replaced crankshaft positioning sensor (60$) shifts like a new car.

Just wanna say, thanks everyone. Didn't think I'd hear anything for weeks or months. Forum sites die over time and didn't know if this one was still going strong or not and didn't know how big the community for these cars were who as well knew about this site.

This site is still going strong.
About a dozen of us post and help out on a regular basis.

This generation of Maxima was built quite well..
They have no fatal flaws which send them to the wrecking yard prematurely .

All weaknesses are well known. As are the necessary repairs. We know how to diagnose the symptoms.

Welcome to the forum !

Hopefully, you got him down from $1K.

Just check the lower radiator support for ROT. That contributes to motor mounts going.

If it is rusted out, one end of the motor support cross member will be sagging. Havoc on motor mounts, Exhaust and maybe even safety.

Maybe you're down south and won't have rust issues. That's why the site asks what your location is.

I just got one for $150 with unknown miles, never maintained, but I replaced the clutch slave cylinder and replaced fluids and it runs great.

If the engine has good compression and the transmission work perfect it's an alright deal. Because otherwise then the two big things all the little parts you can get for dirt cheap.

The downside to this generation is the transmission in terms of reliability. See if there is any play on the driveshafts coming from the transmission If its a manual. That's not good.

I e never worked on a car before but have so far replace the entire clutch hydraulics replaced the motor and tranny mounts, coils, radiator and injector soon. And it's been a good experience.

Parts for this car can be insanely cheap btw. I got my slave and master cylinder new for under $10 each. New coils for $7 each. Brand new Radiator for $40 with shipping. Motor mounts for $15 each.
