4th Gen Maxima Auto Transmission - Driveway job??

What's up,

I have a 1998 Maxima...

Transmission is on its last legs and on the way out...

Is it possible to replace the transmission in my driveway without a lift...

I figured I have the car high enough I can do it. I'm gonna use 2 car jack to for Engine and transmission support with jack stands

However, my dad who's an old retired mechanic says...

It can't be done... Probably bc he knows if I do it, he may have to help me if I get stuck. So he wants to avoid the trouble...

Your feedback would be appreciated...

I can say with 100% certainty that a transmission can be done without a lift. Car has to be jacked up as high as possible though to point where the exhaust tip almost hits the ground...

Driveway Level? If it has any pitch, and worse, the higher the pitch, the more dangerous it is.

I'd suggest you buy one of these, or rent one, to make the job, both ways, easier: https://www.harborfreight.com/automo...ack-61232.html

And it's still going to be a PITA!

While that tools makes the job easier, real men bench press it in there. LOL
And it is a PITA, but very doable!
My tranny swap was done on level ground.

Haha... Well I may have to save my chest day in the gym for this!

So when you replaced yours did you have just the front of car jacked up... Or... Back and front jacked up?

I'm assuming if it's too high in the front at angle, it'll be hard to get the Tranny back at an angle?
Thanks

Yes it will be! But awesome suggestion I'll definitely look into that if I pull the trigger on doing the job

Only the front was jacked up.
The angle is not as bad as you think, and had no effect on the difficulty of the job.

Assuming you have a level work area.

Get a floor jack and jack stands. Preferably 4 of those.

Raise car as high as possible.

use floor jack to lower and raise the transmission.

HA! REAL REAL Men press it up and in with one hand while the other takes videos and selfies doing the whole job! Look at me! Never mind the painted paper mache transmission. And their Chimp toes to thread the bolts!
