4th gen axle shaft choices

I am the new owner of a 98 max gle. Got her with 108k.

After 2 days of ownership I finally got a chance to jack it up and crawl under. Both boots are torn and the grease inside seems quite dry. (But still there)

As I look I find them with or with out ABS and for interlocking diff, or without.

My question is, are they really built different? I've decoded the tranny. It's not a locking diff.

But not every product description lists whether the axle is for ABS not.... does it matter?

thanks

There are differences and some can be substituted. The long (right side) shaft is interchangeable. The short (left side) has to be matched to the transmission. If the car has ABS then you need to have the tone ring on the outer end. The ring is removable and could be transferred if needed. Non ABS cars can use a shaft with the tone ring in place.
