95 Maxima EGR Valve

Anyone ever change the EGR valve on a 4th Gen Maxima? If so…what obstacles did you encounter? Also…any tricks I should know about? I’m 95.7% positive I need to change the EGR valve in my 95 Maxima and I’m not looking forward to that.

thanks in advance for any direction you can provide.

Why do you think you need to change the egr valve ?

The tube which attaches to the egr housing gets blocked with carbon. As well as the passages in the egr housing. Look up how to clean them. You can probably find a video on YT.

EGR valve

The engine will run great for a while then run terribly, then it runs great then it runs bad. I’ve changed all plugs, coil packs, vacuum hoses/lines and the crank sensor.

with the engine running…..I’ve sprayed starter fluid all over the engine looking for vacuum leaks but found none.

I’ll change the cam sensor this weekend and hope that solves the problem

A failed/failing EGR or clogged EGR tube will typically throw a DTC.

Do you have an illuminated check-engine light?

No check engine light BUT…the old girl has 295k so I’m not real sure all electronics are properly working. Can’t tell you the time I saw a check engine light.

I need to change mine according to one of my engine light codes (308k on my '96). I'm pretty sure I removed it once before to clean it, but that was fifteen or so years ago. The flex pipe on the back was tricky because you need a very large wrench but have limited space between the engine and firewall.

I would start by spraying / soaking all the nuts and bolts with a penetrating lubricant like Liquid Wrench. Spray a good amount from different angles and let it sit overnight. Then give it another splash before you start disassembly and it should go a lot easier.

To be honest….I had no idea the back pressure transducer existed or what it is.😂. I’ll do a quick google search to find out what it is and where it’s located and will check tomorrow.

I really appreciate your help with this.
