although i don't have either, a y-pipe or CAI, just like you were thinking, is probably the cheapest way to start out performance

Add another a couple more dollars and you can get a PR CAI from Greg at Custommaxima.com. You could possible even get a budget y-pipe. Check the classifieds and see if there is anything good as far as perfomance.

$200 and you're stock?

Simple: FSTB and RSB

No sense in going fast when you can't handle. The combination of the FSTB and RSB even on stock suspension will improve your handling greatly.

The FSTB does not do anything but look cool unless you are does some serious cornering and even if you are you don't need it. You can only tell a difference in the non SE models. I bought I Warpspeed(the only way to go) Y-pipe for my first performance part followed buy a straight pipe which eliminates the cat right behind you y-pipe. The y-pipe made an awsome difference. I believe that everyone has gotten better gains from the y-pipe than the intake but one complements the other. I am soon putting an CAI on my max. But if i had to pick one or the other i would go with the Y-pipe. And I have a 97 se 5-speed so you should notice similar gains. But what ever you do you need to check out Warpspeed.com (i think that is the link). Good luck

Yeah definitely agree with that.. maximas have decent speed stock but the handling sucks. The Addco RSB and Stillen FSTB were two of my first mods (you can get cheaper ones than $tillen), and those 2 things together make a huge difference. Just get those 2 things without even thinking, you won't regret it!

P.S. Also depends on what you are looking for, I'm personally all about cornering at extreme speeds (120+) so that's why I am doing all suspension mods first and after that I'll do intake and all that. But if you are more of a drag racing type person and won't do that much flying on the highways, then I guess a CAI and/or Y-pipe will be better choices for you.

Thats the way I would go also. And then with some left over get a generic cone filter for now. You will feel a nice difference with the two.

Altezzas, definitely Altezzas. Either that, or a couple of sets of LED washer lights.

Or a Y-pipe.

you are retarded. FSTB was biggest bang for the buck to this date for me, notice the SE. RSTB's arent known for their great improvements, is that what you meant? if so i retract my retarded statement. PLUS, you can get a FSTB off ebay for like 30 bucks shipped. FSTBs are a godsend. Zanardi NSX, Impreza are two cars that come with them stock, i am sure there are others.

I did it Y pipe then CAI. I noticed a big difference adding the CAI WITH the Y pipe. I felt the Y pipe had some gain but it was too subtle to really notice a kick in the pants.
