Question- when does your gas light turn on?
Question- when does your gas light turn on?
this got me thinking, my light comes on about a lil under half way between E and the line above it. Is it suppose to come on later? I dont know if my gas needle is out of place because everytime I fill the tank all the way, the needle goes up past the full mark.
Mine starts to come on right in the middle of the E mark, if it's in city driving. On the smooth highway, the needle will go clearly below the E mark before the light comes on.

I usually don't let my car go under 1/4 tank. Once on a trip home from VT, I was measuring my MPG, the light came on just as I was coming into my home town. The gas gauge was definately down around E.
My light is on 95% of the time. I hate to put gas in my car. One time, someone filled my tank after using it and I went into shock. I never knew that the needle would go up so far, much less PAST the full mark!! (hee-hee)
My warning light turns on when the needle is slightly above the E mark. Normally I put gas in way before that happens. I believe some explanation: gas serves two purposes, to power the car, and to dissipate heat in the fuel pump.

I've seen mine come on before, but for some reason I haven't seen it in awhile, and I've brought it down fairly low before

My light comes on when the needle is very close to the E. However, I always have 2.5 gallons of gas left in the tank when it comes on. If I fill up as soon as the light comes on it takes 16 gallons.
Once (and I'll never let it get this low again) I did put 18.1 gallons in my tank. Way to close for comfort.
BTW, someone mentioned gas cooling the fuel pump earlier in this thread. It is true that gas moving through the fuel pump cools the pump. But you don't need a lot of fuel to keep the pump cooled. 1 gallon of gas in the tank is PLENTY to cool the fuel pump. However, if you ever run completely out of gas it may damage the fuel pump due to lack of cooling.
It is not bad for your car to be low on gas. It is bad for the car to run out of gas! It's a risk you don't want to take. Not to mentioned the walking you'll have to do to get fuel

Re: Question- when does your gas light turn on?
My light fades in and out right around the E mark. After another 10+ miles it stays on for good. I always wondered how the amount of fuel left in the tank is measured by the car...is it done by weight? volume? pressure?

Gas light scare
I live in arizona, and over veterans day holiday i decided to drive to dallas texas to see a friend. I left at 4:00 in the afternoon on thursday. As i got into new mexico, my tank started to get low. I usually allowed 25 miles once my gas light came on. Thats what it was on my old car. So, finally, my light comes on, i was like, damn, i got 25 miles to find a gas station, so i looked at my tripometer to count the miles. So, i went 10, 15 miles no gas station. Finally, i see a sign for a gas station, and pull in. It's closed, its one of those really old ones. I get back on the road, and i see a sign "State Prison Area - Don't Pick up Hitchhikers". So now I am thinking, god, i am gonna run out of gas and spend the whole night here. So then i see a sign for Las Cruces, 35 miles. I am like, no way can i make it that far, but at least something is close. Well, after pulling into two more gas stations that were closed, and slowing down to 60 to save gas mileage. I pulled into the first las cruces gas station, the happiest man alive. I thought i was gonna be stranded, but i made it.

another point
My light comes on when the needle is right above the "E", takes 15.5-16 gal's to fill.
I concur with the earlier comments regarding *not* running out of fuel. You don't want the pump to run dry. The clearances for a FI fuel pump are quite close and running dry may burn the pump up. The fuel acts as the coolant for the pump.
However, there is another reason to not run low. Lots of air in the tank can allow condensation. You can end up with water in the fuel system as a result. This is not as much of a concern in warmer climes. However, where it does get cold in the winter, you have the potential for ice in the fuel line and rusty parts over time.

Man, my light comes on way too late. My light was on when drove to work so i decided to let be on and I'd fill up after work....well, right when I started up the car after work, it kept cranking and cranking...finally it fired up. After that, at every light and stop sign, it was stall. I barely made it to the gas station and replensished the tank.....I hope I didn't screw up my fuel pump too bad! So, my advice, especially with the varrying degrees of when the light comes on, is to fill up before or right when it comes on.

My lights never been on either?? I know I've been on E before but it doesn't come on. I used to see it in my Altima but not in the Max.
I guess it won't hurt as long as I don't wait til the last minute to fill up the tank.
