Do those spring "squeezers" you see at auto parts stores really work?
Do you guys know what I'm talking about? You can find them at Autozone, Kragen, etc. They are made up of some u-bolts and some flat brackets (like the ones that came with your RASB). The concept is to use them to squeeze your coils together (or spread them apart if one needed to). I ask because I LOOOOOVE the ride and handling of my H&R's but boy do I miss my tight wheel well gap of my Intrax.
I would like a cheap, non-permanent (ex. no cutting springs) solution to my dreaded 3 finger gap. So my questions are:
Do these really work (actually help lower the car)?
If yes, does it ruin your ride/handling?
Thanks guys. I appreciate it.

Those are for removing/installing the springs...not lowering your car.
Plus if you squeezed them down a little, then hit a big bump, they might fly off. Just cut a coil off the H&Rs and be done.

Could he be talking about spring spacers? If not, I was with you ben

No, I'm not talking about the actual spring compressor tool you use to take off your springs. These are made for compressing a coil (or two) of your springs and left there. If you put them in reverse, you can open up the spacing among coils. That's how it's advertised. Just go to Autozone, Pep Boys, etc. and you'll see what I mean.

And you peaked my intrest, why did you "unlower" your car? How was the ride?

I had 1.5" Progress springs on and I had 15x6.5" rims on 205/65R15 tires....and they rode great but my valance scraped every time I came into my driveway and left....and I did not have my front lip on then
I unlowered my car and I have the 17x7" rims on 235/45ZR17 tires now and my lip still scrapes a little now
when my my family(wife, two sons, diapers, luggage and whatever else gets into my car)when I had the springs on would go somewhere it sat really low..
yes it looked good dropped I have nothing against dropped rides but I can say "been there done that" my "lowrider" days are over...I love my ground clearance....
I also know it sat really low with my 15" rims...but ooh well....

Metallic, are you saying that you had the 'squeezers' on there and removed them or you had them on and just loosened them and they are still on there?
P.s. What is a 'shadetree' mechanic? Is that a shadey mechanic or is that someone who does it in their front yard? Sorry, I just never heard the term.

P.s.s. Having different sized rims SHOULD not effect the ride height at all. If it did, you didn't chose your tire size correctly.

Update :o)
Well, I bought some. They were $7.50 and that covers 2 wheels. However, my car was not level so I only want to do the rear anyway. Let me back up here a little. Well, when I had my Intrax springs on, I had a (tight) 2 finger wheel well gap. (Gosh it was gooooorgeous). When I switched to H&Rs, it went to a (lose) 3 finger gap.
After installing the 40-50 lb SC in the front and removing my 50 lb bumper and spare tire in the rear, my car went to a tight 3 fingers up front and 3.5 fingers in the rear.
O.k., so that's why I started this thread. Well, I went for it. I jacked up the rear of the car. I jacked up the axle, not the body so that my springs stayed compressed. I will tell you, it took me hours!!! I won't even go into how difficult it is (but if you decide to do this, e-mail me and I'll help you, I even took pics). I squeezed two of the middle coils together. So what was the drop? Exactly half a finger!!!! A lot of work for only half a finger but, in my case, it worked out well. My car is level. I guess one could do it twice and get another half finger but it would be hard to work in there. I didn't do the fronts, obvioulsy, but I looked at them. I guess it would work but the coils up there are muuuuch wider spaced apart. Anyway, just thought I'd share. Thanks to metallic (although he ignored my last set of question) for answering my question if they even work.

Forget I ever mentioned those g. damn f.ing things! They f.ing suck!!! Please DON'T put them on your car. I had all sorts of aweful sounds (while rolling, while braking, while going around turns, while going over bumps...) that went away the second I removed them. It's not worth it.
