CD Changer work w/ Bose headunit?

I posted this in the electonics forum but thought I'd have better luck here. I have a 95-96 Bose system. A couple years ago the cd player stopped working, kept getting an error message and no sound (apparently a common problem). I know the system is pre-wired for a Nissan changer but was wondering if another brand would work with the face plate. I did a search and didn't find any threads on this. Does anyone know or am I stuck having to buy one from Nissan? The dealer said it could cost $200-600 to get the laser fixed. Also any suggestions on alternatives to this problem would be appreciated(i.e. good brands of in dash players and/or changers). Thanks.

I have the exact same problem w/ my '95 SE. Most aftermarket changers work by sending the CD data to the headunit via FM signal, so there is no risk of incompatibility there. You're not stuck buying the OEM unit. (I'm suffering w/ just the radio for now - putting all my $ into performance upgrades)

It's kind of a no-brainer really, if you plan on keeping your car for any length of time: Either pay $175-200 to get your single play OEM unit fixed, or the same $ to get the versatility of a 10 or 12 disc changer. Hmmmmm. . .not much to think about, eh?

Check out www.crutchfield.com for some options.

What I'll normally do is, once I've researched & found the electronics I'm interested in, go to a price-bot like www.mysimon.com to find the best deal available. (Make sure you verify the merchant has stock b4 ordering, though)

Best of luck!
