new tires are shocking

1. fellas, this weekend i added new rims and tires to my max.
ASA JS6 with Michelin XGT H4 tires. i went from stock to these. it shocked me how much i feel the bumps in the road.
i guess a high performance tire makes this difference. now, i use my max for long family drives but i love fast, good handling cars. can i get the both of 2 worlds by changing my shocks and if so to what ones?
2. how much thread is considered safe driving? because of the wheel and lug design, the depth of the new lug was about one inch but only 1/3 was available to screw the wheel on. do you know what i mean? max oem lugs are about 1/2 deep. do you think i have enough? let me know guys. this woman wants to look good but not at the expense of my life. see wheel on tirerack.com that's where i bought them.

If the new wheels are heavier than the originals your unsprung weight went up, and this will increase your ride harshness. Also, if you went from a 15" to 16" wheel (I don't know what size was on a 95 SE.) the tire is also probably heavier: more unsprung weight. Then there is the change in sidewall height of the tire. If you went from a 65 series tire to a 55 series tire, you have a shorter, stiffer sidewall, and that hurts the ride. I also recall that the recommended tire pressure goes from 29 psi (original setup) to 33 psi, and that doesn't help.
I don't see anyway that new struts would make things much better, since most are stiffer than the originals. If you are only engaging 1/3" of threads on the lug nuts tat doesn't sound like very much. I wouldn't feel very comfortable.
When modifying a "family car", I would take most of the suggestions on this bulletin board with a big grain of salt.

btw
The michelin XGT H4 tires are high performance all season tires--and they are quite harsh on a lot of road surfaces. When I was getting new tires, I looked into it and despite that they are pretty good performance tires, they are very loud and harsh. And that was one of the reason I didn't get them. In addition, if I am reading correctly, you have 55 series profile tires--which will add to the additonal "feel" of the road.
XGT's are horrible tires. That's what the GSR comes with stock and everyone changes them out. I'd probably get some Bridgestone Potenza, Dunlop SP Sport 8000, or Yoko A520. I have the yokos now and they're too noisy at high speeds.
all season tires
When I was debating on tires a few months ago, I was down betwen the XGT and the sp5000 and I think personally the sp5000 are quiet and pretty grippy for all season tires. I also looked into the firestone sh30's. In fact those firestones are what I run on now and they are very quiet and they grip the road very nicely. In addition, they are not very rough--which provides a very good, comfortable ride without the noise...
Yes, I know, they are firstones--but they are pretty darn good.
