evap canister/valve error codes??

Thanks for the great info about error codes.

Now, I got "Evap Control System" (07-05) and "Evap Canister Control Valve" on another error code (09-03).

What do I need to do? where is the thing and how do I work on it? Is it important?

Thanks,
Alan

Hmmm. This code seems to be a fairly common occurance here. Although I've never had the code on my 95, a few months back, it happened on my dad's 98GLE. Before I could jump on it, he took it to his dealer and for about $200, they reportedly changed some parts.

When you clear the codes, does the CEL immediately come on with the same codes. It is fairly common for a spurious code to pop up. Unless the CEL/code is recurring, I would be comfortable resetting it and sitting tight. In fact, for my dad's car, I'm wondering if the dealer really solved any real problem but instead used the opportunity to replace a cheap part, tack on $175 in labor and diagnstic fees... when a reset could have done it.

located on top your your engine (at least it is on my '97gxe). It's the little black plastic canister mounted to a bracket that is bolted to the top of the throttle body (adjacent to the throttle and cruise control cables).

The Evap Control Solenoid and Vapor Canister are located on the rear drivers side, just to the back of the rear wheel. I've got a CEL on for the same reason and have been driving that way for almost a year now.

Ran into this

First of all, this could be triggered by NOT closing the gas cap properly or by having a gas cap that is not sealing right.

When I ran into this, I removed the EVAP canister. This is a black box which is located slightly behind the rear right tire. The main purpose of the EVAP system, correct me if I am wrong anyone, is to take the fumes from your gasoline and circulate them into your engine to be used during normal engine operation.
There have been a lot of posts about this here.

I actually took the canister apart and manipulated the valve to ensure that it was working properly.

Since that time I always make sure my gas cap is closed securely and I have not gotten a CEL since.

Also, you may want to make sure that the canister is not filled with H20.

Here are some instructions I received from someone:

Dave,
i had the same problem with finding the canister... the first time i got under the car in the driver's side rear, i said "i don't see a canister"! i was looking for something round and small... well, this sure isnt' round or small.. if you look under the driver's side rear area (just behind the tire) you'll see a box looking thing with a "crease" down the center of it... it's about 10" long and almost as wide... black plastic... it has a few hoses running out of it... two of them right next to each other facing the front of the car... if you look at the canister, you'll see a piece protruding on the right front of it... it has a larger hose connected to it, an electrical plug, and is bolted by two screws to the evap canister itself... this is the purge valve "CVCV" (what was wrong w/my MAX, and the reason i was getting that damn service engine soon light)... anyways, to drop the canister out of the car to check it out, you basically have to remove three bolts (one in the front near all the hoses are and two in the rear) ... then remove the two hoses that plug into the actual canster, the electrical plug plugging into the CVCV, and the larger hose connecting the CVCV... you'll see that there is a little 'catch' on the rear of the canister you have to work around... anyways, sorry this is sooo long... please don't hesistate to get back to me if you have any other questions... also, you can hit me up at my work email if you want... it's a better way to contact me from 8am to 5pm as i really don't check this hotmail acct. more than once a day.. my work acct. is randall.price@adelphia.com
hope this helps...
-Randy
