What's the best oil (brand)? Synthetic or regular?

I just got my 96 SE and was wondering what you guys use in your Maximas. Looking for recommendations for what kind of oil to use...

I have a 95 SE. I've been using Mobil 1 synthetic for as long as I can remember. All the reports and research say its the best. You can't beat it. I'm not just saying that because I work for ExxonMobil.

problems might be arising with mobil 1

as per what some people might remember from a previous thread

I used Synthetic Mobil1 But considernig Amsoil for next oil change.

Nissan filter works best (as to what i've learned on the org)

Amsoil is an excellent oil! These guys are more lab than commercialized. see for yourself at www.amsoil.com their 2000 series 0W-30 is an excellent lubricant. Again you may visit their website for further inquiry. Good luck on your final selection! 96SE auto ALL Amsoil lubricants 170,887 miles!

Maybe that's why the new Mobil 1 absolutely SUCKS when it comes to the four ball wear test.

Amsoil 5W-30 year round. Winter lows in the teens, summer highs in the 90's.

Bought my '99 with 20k on it and noticed a slight ticking when the engine was cold. I flushed it and put in Amsoil 10-40 and haven't heard a tick since. I don't know what made the difference, but I'm stickin' with it.

The ticking is your oil pressure starved valves/lifters. It goes away when you flush it and fill with a good engine oil because the flushing and oil frees up the small passages the lifters require.

It usually goes away when the engine warms up and adequate pressure is built up. If you get constant ticking, I'd start looking at a new head for the block, or atleast rebuilding the current one.

Your car will make the same sound if your valve springs wear too far, but that is rare, and would not be affected by oil changes.

Should I change?

I just bought (last week!)a MINT 95 Max GLE with 105K miles. The car is showrrom condition, owned by a elderly couple who only put highway miles on it and kept it in the garage since she was new. Thing has never seen snow or frost.

My question, is, would I gain anything switching to synthetic after 100K miles? It always had Quaker State 5w30 in her. The dip stick is very clean. Very well taken care of automobile.

And how often do you change your synthetic with filter compared to regular oils?

Thanks for any input.

There should be no problem changing to synthetic as long as the engine has been well cared for. Drain intervals depend entirely on your driving conditions. Unless you do like 2 mile trips in freezing weather you should be able to go at least 5k with a good quality synbthetic, longer depending on analysis results.

With that many miles, watch for leaks. Synthetics sometimes will find their way past older/high milage seals and gaskets. It happened with my mom's '95/90k Accord. Just a slight leak; we went to a semi-syn and it practically stopped. You can always go back to conventional if you start squirtin' everywhere.
I put 10k on Amsoil 10-40 with a filter change @ 5k.
