I hope it is of use to some of you thinking about swapping out your "standard" wiper switch for a variable intermittent wiper switch (standard on GLEs; included in GXE's and SE's S&C package).

My 97 SE 5sp is a stripper. It does not have the variable intermittent wiper which is available only in the SE Security and Convenience package. I did it for several reasons:
1. The "standard" wiper looks like something from a Kia parts bin, whereas the variable intermittent wiper switch matches the shape of the "combo" switch and is more aesthetically pleasing.
2. I truly miss not having the feature of a variable intermittent wiper.
3. Its a simple and relatively cheap "mod"

I did the swap in about 10 minutes. It is a direct swap. You don't have to mess with any relays, fuses, etc.

Here are the simple steps to swap out the standard wiper switch with a variable intermittent wiper switch:


1. Remove lower dash cover (held by 2 screws on each bottom corner, and snap-in clips across the top edge of the cover)
2. Remove metal knee bolster (held by 2 10mm screws)
3. Remove steering column cover (Held by 6 philips screws; 4 in front and 2 in the back)
4. You will expose the column switches. The wiper switch is held by two gold-colored screws. Remove the screws and slide out the wiper switch (direction indicated by the blue arrow).

5. Unclip wiring harness.

6. Install wiring harness onto new wiper switch
Install is reverse of removal.

 

End result:


Note that if your Max is a 97-99 you MUST source a wiper switch from a 97-99. The pinouts are different. (Same goes for 95-96 Maximas ).

The timer is controlled within the switch, so it makes sense. I thought all Maximas came with int wipers but I guess I'm wrong.

I wouldnt have known that there was a standard version of the wipers for the maxima. I thought that intermittent thing was stock

 

The variable intermittent wiper switch is listed around $58+ tax retail at my local dealership.

Sorry I don't have the part number; the stupid parts guy was too lazy to read it off the monitor

I purchased a used switch, and it was only $35 shipped.

Btw, it rained earlier today and the variable intermittent feature worked flawlessly

 

Nice write up, I miss this feature, I had it on my Stanza, but my Maxima SE is like many others a stripper, I'm gonna be doing this "mod" in the near future... and for those of you that don't want to go to a dealer or a junkyard... you can get the part for $50 on-line....

thanx for the write up! i was just saying last week, and have always complained, that i wish i had the variable intermittent wiper. having only slow, fast, and very fast aren't good speeds for all rain. so i got the variable one and will be putting it in this week. just wanted to say thanx!

Could we order this part from Courtesy Nissan or something? I remember something about 25% of parts ordered from them, shipped overnight for free. Anyone have thoughts on this?

 

i did this mod last month and have been meaning to post that it works great. i got mine at a junkyard...the install was pretty easy, only a few screws were a pain but that happens, so i recomend people who don't have variable intermittent get it cuz it's well worth it. i noticed however, that it only adjusts the speed of the first speed and the other two don't change. but, the first is really the only one that i need to ever adjust anyways. just wanted to bump this thread up incase someone else was wondering. yes

Sorry to ask such a dumb question, but we're supposed to order the switch thats called

Electrical, Chassis Electrical, Switches, Wiper Switch, Maxima, W/Variable Sp Wipers

priced at $42.53, correct? As oppposed to the other one thats W/O Variable Sp Wipers (and costs more, go figure). I know the one W/O variable sp wipers is probably the one I already have in my car, but I just wanted to make sure so they don't send me the wrong part. Thanks.

 

that sounds right to me. i wonder why that crappy part that came stock costs more if it does less...
