difference b/w y-pipe and headers

why is y-pipe more recommended than headers? are y-pipes a great benefit to maximas only? my friend told me to get headers instead so now i'm having second thoughts. thanks in advance.

Yes on a Maxima y-pipe is more beneficial b/c the 'pre-cats' are nestled in the y-pipe, and those precats are eliminated in an aftermarket y-pipe. As where headers for a maxima are as efficient as stock manifolds because there are no precats in the manifolds so changing the manifold only will do no good. , emax95 found that out b/c he bought aftermarket headers and there was no gain compared to a y-pipe. If you have an integra get a header, if its a maxima, get a y-pipe.

Sums it up pretty good.

Not quite...

The only thing about headers is that they cost more, but have not been shown to give more power.

Just to be clear, the header design includes everything from the exhaust ports to the cat. It does not just replace the manifolds...

This is true. But if you are looking for the cheapest, then y-pipe is the way to go. A y-pipe is basically headers with out the replacement of the manifolds. The headers that emax bought were true headers, from the head to the cat, and the y-pipe is just from the stock manifold back to the cat. But they give basically the same gain on a Maxima, which would prove that the header designed manifold serves no purpose. I think the reason is because again, there are no pre-cats found in the 4th gen Maxima exhaust manifolds.

No one prefers ANY brand for the Maxima.

Just to repeat. . .HEADERS PROVIDE ZERO, ZIP, ZILCH, NADA, NYET, GAIN ON A 4TH GEN MAXIMA. Unless you really like wasting your $ and swearing a lot under your car, there is ABSOLUTELY NO POINT in getting headers for your Maxima. Get a Y-pipe, like everyone already said. . .

The thing everyone should realize is that different mods are effective on different cars. Because a header is an effective mod on one car, doesn't necessarily mean it will be effective on a Maxima.

My advice is not to listen to "randoms" when it comes to advising you on mods for your car. Go to the source - the Maxima community. Almost every conceivable modification for our cars has been tried or tested by someone on this forum.

Use the search function and all the answers will be revealed.

The kind made by the same company than manufactures the only brand of absolutely supercalafrajalisticexpialodocious ZERO-dust, 300k mi, "leave your paint in front of your car on the asphalt" brake pads I swear by.

(This same company also has a wholly owned subsidiary dealing in the raising and selling of flying pigs). Amazingly enough, investors are lining up.
