Looking to buy 98 GXE with 86k miles...Is this too much?
Hi everyone, I am currently looking at buying a 1998 GXE 5 Speed with 86k miles on it. The dealer tells me that the miles are mostly highway. The car is very clean. I was actually surprised at how clean the interior is. Its looks better than most of the 98's with less miles that I have seen. The car drives very smooth and accelerates very strong. I love the feel of the car and it feels very torquey. The exterior is very clean. There is one small dent that the dealer is willing to have removed. The rims are pretty cheesy looking. They look like 15" rims at best but the car handles quite well.
I am looking to buy this car for my wife. She just totaled her brand new 2001 Sentra SE and I dont want to buy new again for her. The dealer is asking 11k for the car but I have talked them down to 10.5k. Do you all think this is a good deal? I am not worried about the miles but my wife is very skeptical. She was hoping to get one with 50-60k miles on it but the ones we test drove didnt drive as good as this one.
Thanks in Advance...

Good decision on getting a Max. The price isn't too bad. The miles are a little on the high side, but still, Maxima's run good for a very long time so it's all good. Esp. if the car has been kept with good care, which seems to be the case here.
Try to bring it down to maybe 10K?
P.S - KBB value for such Max is around $10,250 or so depending on where you live.

I paid $10,600 for my 96 in 10/01 when it had 75k on it. I don't think $10.5k is a bad deal at all given it's two years newer. My question is: how does the dealer know that the miles are highway? Salesmen will say anything to convince you to buy the car. I have 85k on my 96 and have no problems, and I know they're highway miles.

86k isn't high at all.
I have 120k on my 98. Bought brand new on Aug/98.
If I put masking tape over the odomoter and let you drive my car, you'd think the car has 20k miles. Of course, I take care of my car very strictly. Thats why it doesnt consume single drop of oil even at 120k.
I love the VQ.. VQ is the best engine bar none.
And around $10k sounds right for that car... buy it.

Thanks guys for the replies. My wife and I are going to look at the car again today and she is going to drive it. The car is at a dealer with alot of other used Maximas. The other ones have lower mileage but their not as clean. This one kinda stands out from the rest of the used ones. I'll let you know how we make out..She also wants to look at a 92 Civic 4 door with 133k miles..

I also had her test drive the maxima. She liked it alot but the paint was a bit tough. I didnt notice it last night because it was raining, but there are some nasty scratches on the trunk lid. The interior was just so clean that I didnt pay much attention to the exterior. This shows the mileage of the car..

I got my 98 GXE 5spd with 54k for 10 thou. Very similar to yours, perfect interior, but some scratches and a ding or 2 on the outside. Since yours has more miles, I'd try to work the price a bit more. Tell them you like the car, but prefer auto's, and 5spd's are less expensive/less sought after. point out all the scratches and problems etc... you know, bs the bastard
