Hey there, I have a '98 GXE Auto and am beginning to mod it. Does anyone know ... while I'm sure the auto transmission can handle passive mods such as exhaust/intake etc. I was wondering if I add a stillen supercharger can the automatic transmission handle that (substantial) extra power?

It can unless you do a lot of hard launching (like drag racing). I've seen a Maxima or two with the teeth sheared off of the gears in the transmission. But for normal driving, you should be OK. There are lots of people that have the SCs and don't have a problem with the transmissions.

Your auto will yes hold up, it's just a matter of how long. I talked to Adam Humee@ Stillen and he told me more then half the owners with SCs are sutos and they have had no complaints. Who knows... Go to http://www.levelten.com they are located in Hamburg NJ and they can do some serious **** to your trans. It all comes down to $$$ they can do your valve body for around 4 bills.

The reason you don't see the high horsepower

S/C'ed or NOS cars having problems with their tranny is because 99% of them have the VB upgrade. If you don't have one, what are you waiting for?

Don, how does the VB upgrade protect the transmission from the increased stress from lots more power? The problem that I have seen with the transmission is with the gears, not the VB.

What is the valvebody upgrade...

Is it a good idea to get for a pretty much stock auto max if it's driven hard?

I dunno who to believe...

I saw an article in Max Speed where JWT said that the auto tranny can't handle more than a 60hp increase. But here, someone posted that another tuning company said that it can only be boosted up to 210hp(20hp increase). I'm thinking(read:fervently hoping) that JWT is right, especially since there's SC'd autos running around without much trouble.

That's exactly what I thought. I'm trying to assess whether I should mod my 98 with the intention of popping on a supercharger or blow a buck for the 2001 model (which is pretty cheap in my opinion) with a 5 spd and mod that one. With a 5 speed I feel I have more control and they're probably cheaper to replace if I blow something in the tranny. I have to say, in my opinion, when I brought my 98 in for service I took out a 2k Maxima SE and I was not impressed in comparison to my 98. The 2k felt like a Buick LeSabre in ride quality (a boat) and the engine didn't feel quite as spirited as mine (which has less power). It felt like the loaded 2k with more junk swallowed up that hp. Whether the #'s show this or not this is how it felt to me. Also 5 speeds are difficult to find in the NY area.

I run 288hp at the WHEELS and I haven't seen

much of a problem with my auto tranny. Most of the automatic S/C'd cars in that hp range also have the VB upgrade and haven't had any problems with their tranny (unless they were already having one)

D_Man2k - 2000 S/C'd auto
Jane97SE - 1997 S/C'd auto
Vapors - 1996 SMX S/C'd auto

The weak link in the auto tranny is the slippage between gears. The VB mod ELIMINATES the slippage. Firm, hard shifts. Lower ET's.
