Help!! please

My 96 Maxima GLE(auto) is having an engine prob.
The RPM can't go above 2000. The gauge and the engine shakes and comes down under 2 when i gas it or floor it. I thought it would've been a transmission prob. But i put it in Neutral and floored it and it still can't go above 2000. Can anybody help me what the problem is with this? Please help.. This is the only problem i'm having for the last 80,000 miles.

Probably a spark or fuel problem.

Did you have/do the 60k service?

When was the fuel filter last replaced?
When were the plugs last changed?
Does it sound/feel like the engine is misfiring? (shakes/vibrates; exhaust smells of unburnt fuel?)

You may have a load of bad gas, a clogged fuel filter, a defective fuel pump, or an ignition problem.

I recommend:

1) Check the ECU for codes, even if you do not have a CEL. Do a search if you're not sure what I'm taking about.

2) Check the fuel pump: with the windows down, in a quiet place, sitting in the driver's seat, turn the ignition from the off position to the on position (do not start). Listen for the fuel pump whine (priming) at the rear of the car. Does it sound abnormal?

3) Consider replacing the fuel filter.

Buy a Hayne's manual for your car. Use it. Conservatively speaking, mine's paid for itself about 200+ x over.

could be a MAF (mass air flow sensor) i had a 92 se-r that was in an accident and the MAF was damaged and the car would barely run.
