Measuring Speed after 140...

...while on the highway or running on the street, isn't there some sort of LCD display/sensor module that you can buy to find out how fast you're really going?

If you have this, let me know where you bought it, and for how much, do you like it, does it work well, etc.

TIA.

My suggestion would be to NOT exceed 140 mph under any circumstances!

Call the cops. They have a device (radar gun) that can do this. I'm sure they would be more than happy to clock you at over 140 on the highway. J/K

I'd often wondered about this when I've crept the needle beyond 140 and wonder just how fast I'm going, or if I ever want to know my top speed.

They don't anymore. I have the last of the big beast. 1989 FJ1200 Sport Touring crotch rocket.

Here's a link.

Buy a handheld GPS. You can get the cheapest ones at around $100 from sporting good stores and places like Wal-mart. You can probably find other (hopefully safer!) uses for one as well. My Garmin 12 even records the maximum speed reached.

a handheld GPS can give you top speed? is it a program for specific ones or included in all of them

Sweet

Get one of these:
http://www.defi-shop.com/sports/spotsfrm.htm

Its a universal HUD that can read speeds up to 400km/h!

Some GPS devices can. But I wouldn't be too confident about the accuracy of it. The DoD guys "fuzz up" the latitude/longitude resolution (simplified explanation) so that the GPS resolution is not that accurate (I thought +/- 100m or ~300ft). They do this using SA=Selective Availability which has something to do with the timestamp on the signals from the GPS satellites.

SA is off now, GPS will be more accurate than anything, short of a properly calibrated in-car digital display.

Ditto, SA doesn't affect GPS anymore. Handheld GPS is accurate enough for instrument landings in aircraft, it certainly can tell you your max speed. I have one that does.

Does DoD turn on SA again if there's any sort of a national security threat?
