Y-pipe + K&N drop-in = limited gains?

I'm considering a y-pipe and was curious if having only a K&N drop-in would limit the gains from the y-pipe.

Even though I'm auto I'm not sure if I want a CAI and I don't know if a hybrid would be worth the $ if I won't see the low-end gains of the CAI.

Why I don't want CAI? Noise, hole in car, and I drive in areas that sometimes flood...

From a airflow perspective would I see more gains from a y-pipe if I got a HAI or even just a cone+adapter?

Y-pipe w/o cone style intake still gives 10-12+ FWHP.

Proven over and over again is that in the Maxima, the HP gains are almost identical for a CAI vs. HAI. Save your money and buy a popcharger if you are going to get something other than a drop in. And yes, HAI's are very loud too ...
