the other night my friends and i were on our way home from the track after a few good runs. we both have 97 SE 5spds... his is stock and i only have a pop charger... so anyway, we were on I-40 and he pulls up beside me. so just for fun i drop to 4th and go. he does the same and it is even for a while. (mind you i have much more weight in my car... i am about 230lbs.. and my passenger is about 190... while my other friend is alone and weighs about a buck 60.) so we get up to about 100mph and he starts pulling on me ... at about 120 he was about 3/4 of a car length ahead of me. then bam... for some reason he stops pulling... and by 130-135pmh or so i'm a car length ahead of him . this seems kinda weird to me... why did i all of a sudden pull on him?? any ideas... if not, it was still a fun race until we had to shut down b/c of traffic

i live inbetween winston salem and greensboro and am fixin to move down to raleigh this fall... what's the scene w/ the max community down there?!? it would be cool to get up w/ you guys to check everything out...

we were actually going / coming back from an 1/8 in Benson... rockingham is too far for a weekly drive. but yeah man... i've got other friends with 4th gens... and there are modded ones @ NCSU and around town. but yeah man, keep in touch... we need more maxima's representing @ the track

i just checked out where Benson was... cause i had never heard of the town... so that's pretty close... is it a good 1/8th mile track?

it's a shame tho b/c there are hardly any modded max's here in winston... i know of one on the board... but everytime i see a max w/ a youthful face in the drivers seat, i show them what they can be like... i get many heads turning and TONS of people love my interior... so everyone that i see i try to get into moddin theirs... so hopefully we'll have alittle community here in the triad...

Maybe your intake?

 

1)You have more mods.

2)Weight does not affect top speed. Mods do.

 

My guess is that he was pulling on you because you were in the mid rpm region in 5th gear at around 110-120 mph, but when you got to the high end at 135, the pop charger is supposed to have more power, so thats why you started pulling.

 

..sounds like he has a speed limiter? 120mph is where the speed limiter should "jeopardize" the race...

but his is 97 SE, which does not make sense at all....

 

This also depends on when your and him shifted from 4th to 5th gear. Maybe he kept it in 4th too long. The VQ runs out of pep at 1115-120 mph in 4th, you have to go to 5th gear by then. Also, it could be your POP charger. It really wakes up around 5000 rpms.

That's exactly what I was thinking. He needs to find out for sure what gear each car was in. Fourth will max out at 130, and like you said, we start losing power after 5200 rpm's.

The same thing happens when I go at it with a 5th gen. We're pretty even until the top of 3rd and 4th gear, after that, they slowly walk me . Fun stuff though......

 

120 is about where i shifted to 5th... 4th was dying out... maybe i just realized that b/f he did?? oh well, it was fun... and he doesn't have a rev limiter... i've been in his car over 130mph... i just get there quicker

in reference to the post of jmax i was the guy he was up against. i think the reason i pulled on him at first was because he was above 6k rpm and i think that is the same reason he pulled on me(in 4th gear)but we were hauling ***
