My previous wheels were that size and offset. No problems.

 

2k2 Altima 17's are also 17x7, 45mm ...

You could do a search for a thread by Mishmosh where he posted some good pics of the wheels on his Max so you can see how much it sticks out/stays tucked in.

 

I have 17" with 40mm off set. The front is perfect but the back is inset a little. Idealy 40mm in the front and 35mm in the back would be perfect. I don't know if wheels come like that with different offsets or not, I would imagine so. I tried buying a spacer for the back but that does not work because the bolts are not long enough, I ended up stripping my lug nuts and bolts. Had to repace both. Thats my two cents.

 

dont get 7 inch wide rims if you can help it. finding fairly inexpensive tires for 17 x 7s isnt the easiest.

 

According to the service manual, '98 is 16x6.5" with 45mm offset.

 

With that rim size, you only have like 3 tire choices. Go aleast 17X7.5.

Because for the 4th Gen, 17x7's should be shod with 215/50/17's.

They have 14 kinds of those on TireRack.

 

OK. Taking stock as 215/55/16, with 215/50/17 you are 0.6% bigger than stock, pretty much exactly stock size when it comes to plus sizing. With 225/45/17 you are 1.3% smaller than stock. A great difference? I don't think so

Bleh. I'm just going off the FAQ.

Besides, a bigger tire keeps your odometer reading smaller.

 

I have 17x7 Enkei Inazuma, 40mm offset, with 225/45/17 Potenza 730s. The rims fit fine and the tires were easy to find (Tire Rack) at $151/tire shipped.

When I did my search, I saw a couple people say the same thing.
Is it because of tire choices, or is it performance/ride?

 

The reason I regretted not getting larger than 7" width rims is because the max tire width you can put on a 7" rim (safely, not physically) is 225. I would have liked to get 235s. But then I saw the price differences between the 235s and 225s and now I don't regret it any longer. Plus the rims and tires look excellent on my ride. I found plenty of tires to choose from in a 225/45x17.

i'm also looking into buying new tires for my 98 maxima.
i have the maxima replica wheels 2001.

i'm not too sure which ones should i get.

you'll laugh at me but right now i have 215/50/17 in the front and 225/55/17 in the rear. not that i wanted it like that but that's how i bouth it.

my wheels are 17x7 , 40mm offset.
what do you guys think i should get?

You can use 235/45/17 if you have 7.5" rims or wider. Since we're talking about 7" rims, 225 is the maximum recommended width for that rim size, according to tire manufactruers etc.

Now, lots of people do put 235/45/17 on their 7" rims and have no problems with it, so

Personally, I wanted to get bigger wheels but not so big that performance would hurt. With 17x7s and 225/45/17, you get a bigger wheel and tire, but not too heavy. You get an intake and/or Y pipe to speed you up, but the bigger prettier rims will slow you down. You can get big lightweight rims, but they cost big money, like at least $350 per wheel.

My 17x7s weigh 20 lbs and my Kumho ECSTA 712s at 225/45/17 weigh 22 lbs, for a total wheel/tire weight of 42 lbs per wheel. I got them at discount tire direct for $100 per wheel. They were a dis-continued model. It's strange, though. They're supposedly dis-continued but the ADR site still shows them, and they cost more

I absolutely agree with this post. I have 7" rims and was told that I could physically get 235s on the rims; however, you will be compromising the tire and more importantly your safety. I went with 225 Potenza 730s from TireRack for $151/tire shipped.
