what happens when u let other ppl drive ur car....
my mom drove my car today
she filled the tank up with octane 89 or watever the middle one is.
Now my gas tank has over 3/4 of octane 89
should i expect anything to happen to my car??
i've been using octane 93 ever since i had the car

Don't u think your bein a little dramatic Cyrus?
The lower grade gas is fine. Your ECU will adjust to the settings, and your car will learn to run fine off it. However, 93 is recommended becuase that's what the car was originally set for. My sister has been using 86 octane gas in her 95 GXE for like 5 years now. The car had 167,000 miles when the engine died. (major leaks). Nissan put a new engine block in, and just now said one of the knock sensors looked bad. (170k)
Tim W put it in a good way..."The cheap stuff is fine but I put 93 octane in...I think of it as added insurance."

what about the fact that in the manual it says something to the effect of "you can put in whatever grade fuel you want, and you might even notice an increase in performance with higher octane fuels"?
I'd think that it doesn't really matter what you put in, given that statement.

NO MORE MR NICE GUY
Well since Im such a nice guy, I let my peeps pride my ride, however, to be disrespected in return I don't appreciate it.
They bring back less gas then I left it, trash the interrior when after I just detail it including steam cleaning the seats.
MAJOR RIM RASH from curb shots and ICE SCRAPED my EXCELSIOR windshield banner now its got cracks.
the other thing that pushed my buttons was that they parked it where I didnt last leave it and of course only to find it littered with parking tickets
thats what happens when people drive "YOUR" car

Uh . . . no. Our car needs and wants 91 or better. If 91 is un-available, we can use the lower stuff. I'm looking at my manual right now. Actually, in the section for feul, it gets quite complicated. In higher altitudes above 4000 ft, like Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, etc, you can actually use 85 octane. This just follows the general rule that the higher altitude you go, the less octane you need.
I live at sea level, the hudson river is right next to me. I experimented once with 87. Under light acceleration, the car was fine. But the moment I got on it hard, ping/knock city. Back to the 91 for me![Smilie](https://maxima.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Oh, and to get back on topic, I've let 2 friends drive my car. The 1st one complained that my car was too powerful. I was like "You kidding me?" I think it was because he wasn't really used to a stick and he had a heavy foot. every time he engaged 1st the tires would spin
Another friend drove it, he knew clutch. He said, man this car moves! FUnny thing is, he wasn't even florring it. I guess he picked up on the power b/c he only had to push the accelerator a little and it repsonded very well![Smilie](https://maxima.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

To settle this once and for all (hopefully)...
Premium fuel is recommended for maximum performance. Don't believe me? Look inside your gas cap.

However any performance loss from the usage of a lower octane (91-) is restored when you begin to use premium (92+) again. And since your mom (MaximaPower) only filled in one tank it should be nothing to worry about.

i kno this is a lil off topic, but can sumone describe what knocking sounds like? i dun think it's happend to me before, and im scared to have it happen. i jus wanna kno what it sounds like in case it does. thanks guyz.

A little knocking is expected. But once it happens, the ECU should retard timing to correct for it. Drive around, with all the windows closed, radio off, climate control off. When you accelerate lightly, you might hear a faint metallic tapping sound from the engine, and then it quickly disappears. That's the knocking, and your ECU/knock sensor doing it's thing to correct it.

Re: what happens when u let other ppl drive ur car....
I'd find the following (mostly from family)....
1) Bad/Wrong gas was used (mother)
2) Something that was working fine, "supposedly" to them, doesn't work anymore (sis from out of town)
3) Inside got trashed & smelled like food (mother, poss. sis from out of town & oldest sis)
4) Car was ragged on (oldest sis, poss. freinds if I let them drive it)
5) SES light is on (brother)
6) Car started to fall apart (crush, happened when I let her drive my '98 Altima a few yrs back, guess my Alty took a liking to her too, lol,
& when we stopped talking/hanging out for some strange & sudden reason, my Alty started to fall apart & got crashed, I just hope this doesn't happen to my SE)

You guys really should be using the higher octane ratings. If you use a lower rating, the fuel 'fires' at a different time than it is supposed to, too early. And this will cause lost power. When you have the max octane, it fires at the correct time, allowing the most power to be had.

In my family, the women treat cars as a means to get from A to B and that's it. They just ain't interested. My sister even put 87 in our diesel mercedes. That car still runs, but never will it be a smooth as it used to be.
