How do you know if you need to replace...?

How do you know if you need to replace your timing belts (or drive belts)?
Does the performance of the car lag somewhat or significantly?
I had them replaced @ 45000 when the dealer told me there were cracks in them. Now I have 82000 and want to do it myself.
I did a search and here's what I found (for those who want to post telling me to do a search)

but, it was not much help. Thank you for your input.

timing belt or drive belts? there is a big difference. if i'm not mistaken, our maxima's have timing chains... which don't get replaced unless they break. but i have 71,000 and my belts still look brand new. unless they put some cheap belts on there i can't imaging them needing to be replaced yet.

buy a haynes or chilton maunal, they both are very good references.
