New Maxima SE owner and new forum member

Hi guys, I have been posting intermittently about my new car, but I haven't formally introduced myself yet. Everyone here has been so friendly and helpful, I think I've found a new home!

I first posted asking about general information regarding gen 4 Maximas and then I went on to post about a short shifter and optimal launch RPMs since I was taking the car to the track. Anyway, here's a bit about me and my new car.

I'm a new owner of a 1995 Maxima SE 5-spd... black on black leather, fully loaded with every possible option. The car has 65,000 miles on it. It had been driven by an old retired dude who worked for the government. He used to get the car serviced at Nissan every 3 months. He used to have the engine bay shampooed and cleaned every 4 months. The underside and the body of the car is immaculate. The interior looks like a brand new car with leather. He used to treat it by hand twice a year.

I had been driving an auto tranny Toyota Camry for 6-7 years and its been 8 days with my new standard tranny Max. It has been quite a learning experience and nothing short of exciting! I even went to the track for the first time ever last night. Thanks for all your advice on the "optimal launch RPM" thread.

Here's a couple of pics of my car from last night:

Here's my timeslip from my very first time at the track... and I had been driving a standard for 7 days at that point (yesterday)

God I love Maximas!!!

I look forward to spending more time here and getting to know you guys and learning. Thanks again for all your help so far!

welcome! although, i must warn you... the more you hang out here, the more you will want to modify your car. i started hanging out here to learn more about the car and what it has to offer, but i eventually catched the mod bug and now i can't get rid of it.

Oh I am definetly looking to mod my car! It is bone stock right now. I was thinking of starting off with suspension and then first performance mod after that would be Y-pipe? I dunno... I've been using a lot of the SEARCH function on this forum for research.

I would obviously also have to find a local source for parts, if possible. I am in Toronto/Waterloo, Ontario.

i started out with suspension mods. fstb, rsb, then came the ground controls and kyb agx. performance mods followed with a cai, y-pipe, and exhaust. next is rims then sound system.

happy modding!

First mod and the easiest and cheapest is get some Clear Corners for that baby. Ebay has got loads of them cheap.

if the first thing you are going to get is clears take this into consideration.

there are two clears....one is regular and one is diamond clear. If you have any plans of changing your 95 headlights to 97+ headlights go for diamond clears as they will match much better.

Nice track time. with an intake and a cat-back exhaust I got a 15.6. you have potential kid.

hehe thanks. I actually taught myself. My very first time driving a standard tranny was the day that I bought the car. I drove it home on the highway through rush hour traffic... nothing like pushing you off the deep end of the pool to make you learn how to swim! My buddy drives a Mustang and he's got quite a bit of experience shifting and at the track... so he gave me a few pointers that REALLY helped!

It took a couple of days but I finally got the hang of it and on day 7 I ran that time on the track on run #2. I was quite pleased. I was having enormous traction problems at the start. If I can get that down, I have no doubt that I can run 14.9 on this same stock trim.

I'm hoping some of you guys can teach me. What I did this time on the track was:

drop the clutch at about 1500RPM
speed-shift 1-2 at 6200RPM
speed-shift 2-3 at 6000RPM

I experimented with shifting later, but that gave me consistent 15.4s... could have also been that the track conditions were getting worse and worse with the big musclecars laying rubber all over it!

I want to learn how to feather the clutch at 3000RPM... maybe that'd put me into the 14s?

Nah I'm not really into modding the car for aesthetic purposes. I sorta' like the OEM black on black look... it looks mean!

First thing that I'm looking to do is suspension. The brands that I am considering, from personal experience in my previous car are:

Struts: Tokico, Koni, Bilstein (sp?)
Springs: H&R Sport, Eibach Pro

Out of those choices, which I assume are the best ones out there, which combo would be the most recommended for maximum handling/performance. I don't really care about looks as much (ie I don't really care if it is dropped 2" vs 1.5" like those Honda boys all bicker about). Obviously if I can get it all in one package then that would be desirable.

Thanks for your help!

you mean ME the mustang buddy speedemn ??
haha

Actually, I wanted to know about the y-pipe you guys
keep talking about, what is the stock size, and
what is the size of the aftermarket ones? (2.25", 2.5"?)
Does your y-pipe have the cats on them, and so do
aftermarket ones not have cats? That's some nice gains
from a single exhaust piece..

Good question. I'm not really sure myself, but I'm sure some of the guys here know.

I was looking at the Stillen off-road race pipe as well as the regular race pipe. I assume that the off-road y-pipe would yield the most HP/torque gains. But I don't know how it would compare to say, the Budet Y-pipe or whomever else makes one.

Maybe someone can help clarify this?

I'd avoid the stillen pipe. The stillen "off road race pipe" is the same thing as the "stillen y-pipe." Stillen pipes are notorious for making an annoying buzzing sound from the flex section, known as "Bees in a can" syndrome.

Our stock ypipe has 2 pre-cats in it. Aftermarket pipes get rid of these. Aftermarket pipes are eithe 2 or 2.25" collectors that merge and become a 2.5" pipe. 3.0" pipes are also available for forced induction applications.

I'd suggest Warpspeed or Budget y-pipes. Like I said, the Stillen makes annoying noises, and there have been some quality issues with Cattman pipes as of late. My Cattman pipe is perfect however, and I believe it is only a certain batch of pipes that have suffered for the failing flex section problem.

y-pipe correction

Nealoc187 slight correction. The Stillen y-pipe and Ca**man versions have a 2 1/4 " collector, not sure about the Budget. Dallas and I use 2 1/2 inch and may even try a larger test version. The collector on a Ca**man pipe will literally fit inside one of ours. I can ask Dallas to post a PIC if people are interested.
Do all y-pipes unleash power?, Yes. Are all created equal? Not even close. Am I biased?, of course and for good reason. We are constantly trying to think of ways to make our products better, highest quality and keep them reasonably priced. Watch for a new announcement in near future as WSP again leads the way in obtaining mods reasonably priced..
Our program to assist 3rd Gen owners with purchasing mods has be successful. Many have taken advantage of our plan and not one owner has not come through as promised.
Thanks for your support.
