The majority of the HP gained from a 5th gen engine over the 4th gen comes from it's intake. Just buy the ME Variable intake, and it will put you up there with the 5th gens HP wise.

Getting the Intake will be much more cost effective and much less of a headache.

2k1 only has 222hp. the 2k2's have 255. i'd also recommend just getting the VI over replacing the engine unless u've got loads of miles on it. much cheaper...

So many people associate the VQ35DE automatically with a 5th gen. They don't realize the engine change occured.

Nissan made a really nice website and they explain it there. Even comes with a photo. If you've got the Altima or SE-R promo CD, you'll also find a cool animation there.

I was gonna say something about the caps lock too.

sharabi, clee's nailed it right on the money. Unless your engine compartment got gutted and your ECU got fried and you were going to replace your EGI (engine) harness and chane inline connectors, it won't work.

You're looking at a lot of $$$ & heartache but anything is doable.

well in my opinion, lets say you had A LOT of miles on a 4th gen engine, and you had a 5th gen engine laying around (like our original poster here) it wouldd be worth the time to have an extra 200,000 miles added to a car........just a thought (and estimate with the miles there)

like i said, i have my 4th gen 1998 i got last month and am waiting for some $$ to give it small modification. it has 57,000 miles on it.

this engine is COMPLETELY free for me. its goin to the junk yard,
so i have the opportunity to:

1. spend money as you all mentioned to put to get the engine istalled maybe after i reach 200,000 miles on it.
the car has currently 21,000 miles on it.
the guy got drunk in chicago and hit and tollway booth, LOL, it was empty.

2.or sell the engine and take the money to give more mods to maxima.

suggestions please.

If you are short on money sell it! If you dont really need any extra money then keep it till about 150k miles, swap the engines, and it will be almost new!

Wow at least your honest. But do you want to learn? Or do you just want everything given to you?

If you want to learn, DIY, Do It Yourself. Also searching or looking around here will help.

If not spend the $2000 and let us know what happens. BTW don't forget the ECU

personally i think it would be cool to do just to say i did it...
but not for the HP gain...

i'd rather get a variable intake and a bunch of other mods with that cash.

how much do you think he could get for that engine?

I would sell it and get hp mods.

Especially since you got it for free.
