Got 5spd for $800

Hey just wanted to tell you guys that I was able to get all the 5spd components for $800 dollars including shipping. Everything that was listed for the conversion was sent!! Including all wires, nuts and bolts. The transmission is non-locking and it came from a 95gxe. I guess purchasing the Quaife diff. should solve my differential problems. The vehical has about 64K. Visually the tranny looks clean. I was wondering if it would be possible to recondition the gear-box. If needed. Maybe, have my mechanic look at things internally, to see the conditioning of the unit??? In the mean time is there any practical way for me test the tranny??? Maybe I'm wrong??? Worst case senerio, if it is busted or damage in any way, I'll despute it with my creditors!! and re-ship the unit back!!! I'll keep you posted...

Of course the major thing to look for in Maxima 5-speed transaxles are the differential carrier bearings. If your mechanic is going to have the case open, that's a major thing to look for. With only 64k miles I'm guessing the gears will be fine. But good price with all the parts!

Take a look at motorvate's section on tranny rebuilding. Perhaps you could print this out and give it to your mechanic if it's not something you're comfortable analyzing (I know I wouldn't be).
Here's one of the direct links to the section:

http://www.motorvate.ca/auto/maxima/...re_summary.htm

As long as you have the tranny out and whatnot, you or your mechanic could clean it out thoroughly and verify that the shims in the diff carrier bearings are the correct size, and that the bearings are OK. Knowing this and also thoroughly cleaning and taking the opportunity to start over with gear oil & using GL-4 from the get go would be good peace of mind.

Thanks for the info guys.. I greatly appreciate it! I will print out the inner working of the gear-box and have my mechanic look into the carrier bearings. At the same time, I'll have him install the Quaife Diff. and a new clutch kit.. Perferably the one from JWT and Stillen Light-weight Fly Wheel. I'll keep you posted...

yo, that's hot but i doubt u got anything brand new wit that price...there are certain parts recommended brand new or u may experience problems after conversion...those parts include:

master cylinder
slave cylinder
clutch
return spring

i found all parts for conversion and spent about 1900 dollars. i was getting parts from everywhere and all my stuff has great mileage

trans non locking has 53,000 miles
abs axles have 51,000 miles
new ACT clutch
and just got my new master and slave cylinder today...

i'm ready for conversion, just my bad luck that stopped me from getting it so far...but all i'm waiting for is a shift **** and ACT clutch...looking around for a good **** or atleast an I30 one...

good luck with that though...how long is the warranty? and where u get parts from?

Well I'm definetly getting the JWT Stage 2 Clutch Kit with the Stillen Light Flywheel setup. Also I purchased a brand new Return Spring. As far as the Master and Slave cylinders, I'm willing to take my chances on those units, because they are in great shape.. but If it becomes a problem later... I'll replace them quickly.
I'm also getting the OBX short-throw shifter and a great **** to go along with it. Trouble is.... Finding a decent **** is difficult!!!
Part are on warrenty and I got it from Jays Auto Parts in Albany New York.. The guy has a doner car, were he did all of the transplant work from.
Thanks for the info...

Don't get the stock shift ****!! It's too tall and boring. Our shift ***** have the same threading as Mazda Miatas, so get an aftermarket Miata ****, like the one I got;

http://www.rspeed.net/miata/item.asp...9&prod=531-103

It won't make the stickshift that short, but it'll make it shorter, and cool looking

I dont think that the overdrive thing is a problem. The wiring system will be setup strickly for manaul shifting only. The overdrive light wont be a factor, It would simply be disabled. Unless your looking to change your shifter with your Auto setup. Then I could see your dilemma. They might have a few models that may support your application. Honestly, you might want to post that question out there on the forum or do a search. That may be your best bet. let me know....

You might check and make sure that your STS holds stock nissan thread lenghts before going out and searching for a ****. I think I've seen at least one sts (for my acura) that didn't retain stock thread, and instead, encouraged you to get one of the universal aftermarket screw-connected shift *****.

I really need to order a circular miata ****...the gametime decision for me is whether or not to go polished aluminum or crinkle black.

Thanks for the advise. I'll be sure that the STS threading is the stock length. But I was told that the OBX's STS were ideal for the Maxima. I'll keep you posted....

Chrome has its prettiness factor but remember, it gets freezing cold in winter.I think it also gets quite hot in the summer. The crinkle black just gets warm, that's it.
