Want A Shift Light...

Heres a question for those that have some knowledge about shift lights:

How exactly does it work? I have seen quite a few tachs+shift guages and they are all huge. I dont really need a tach since the max already has one. However, I would like to add a shift light. What does the tach signal look like? Is it just a simple voltage level which the tachometer converts into a readable number? If its just voltage level, then I can just design a simple circuit to light up a LED for my shift light and embed that right into my console and not have to worry about a rice boy meter.. any thoughts on this? Am i making sense here?

Ya, your making sense. Some smaller ones are made, but can get pricey. I have an Autometer one that I may be putting up for sale shortly, (its like the ones othe Autometer gauges) and its very easy to install.The hard part is getting it to light up at the right RPM, you you design it yourself....

i dont think there is a voltage that sends out from the oem tach....the tachs you buy come with that feature, and when it reads a certain rpm on their tach, the light triggers.....the only thing that gets tapped into from the OEM tach is the actaul rpm reading....the aftermarket tach/shift lite makes the LED go off

yea thats what im trying to find out..what kind of a signal is sent on that wire, OEM Tach line, so that I can trigger something at a certain RPM?....

Ive been doing some reading and it seems like there are pings for each cylender.. i.e. there are be six pings per revolution for a six cylinder system.

Is this correct?

get the instructions on the install, and whichever wire you tap into for the tach there you go.....dont exactly know how you could make it give off an LED ...

if (rpm = 6200)
make led go off;
