replacing knock sensor

Anybody have the write up on changing the knock sensor? Is it easy? Costly? And will it help with the 1/4 mile time? ALso, anybody have the part number? Can I get this from a local parts store instead of the dealership? Thanks in advance.

Re: replacing knock sensor

The knock sensor is tought to replace if you have big hands...I barely managed and I wear medium size gloves...its located in the "valley" of the V under the intake manifold about 1 cylinder in looking from the drivers side....its a real pain to change wihtout taking the whole top end apart....but doable....good luck.

Don't do it unless you are throwing an engine code for the knock sensor. If you aren't....it's a waste of money. They cost over $120.

The knock sensor error code is 0304. Go here
http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/ecu.html to read your ECU.

The sensor replacement procedure is here -
http://www.skippynet.com/maxima/knocksensor.htm

Today I got a Bosch replacement which had practically identical numbers compared to OEM at http://www.thepartsbin.com for $109.55.

And any of you guys that say this is a 5 minute procedure must have some small appendages! Getting it out with a U-joint socket extension was easy, but I had to get my wife's small hands to thread the new one back on.

Pretty good post for a newbie!!! Your car will only be faster if you have current problems with your knock sensor, if you replace something thats not broken yo wont get any difference in speed.

ya check your ECU first, and if you get the code, AND you more than likely have bad gas mileage, and its like your a turtle coming off the line....you've got a bad knock sensor! .....definately dont get them from a local place like autozone...they are like $260....at the dealer they are 100 dollars less, and get them from the partsbin.com.....

It is actually a pretty straight hook-up. You use a long extension, with a swivel and a 12mm socket. If you magnetize the socket, you can "fish" the bolt back in and start it by hand with the extension, swivel, and socket. It took me about 10 mins to do from start to finish. Be careful, the original bolt is going to be on very tight and you think it's not ever going to break loose but it does. You may want to have something to retrieve the bolt if it were to fall off the socket.

Hey THANKS! I've had 10 yrs experience on SE-R.net with my old Infiniti G20 so I'm really not new to the way Nissans work. I was getting the 0304 error code, but now all I get is 0505 after I replaced it Sweet. No more surging.

since we are on the topic what does the knock sensor actually refer to, like I USED to be into honduhs but thats a no more, and Iknow that when they get a knock sensor code that it means that their valves are messed up and will eventually float a valve, there for destroying the head. Just wondering what is actually wrong with this sensor, just a faulty sensor or is it a internal prob. I mean if Iwere to replace this sensor will the prob be a no more? please help!!

Thanks
Brandon

the wonders of nissan....isnt that important on maximas....just detects knocks and pings and sends it the ECU.....this could be caused by bad injectors, low octane gas etc.....when it fails, the engine goes into fail safe mode to not further mess anything up....you can drive around with it fine, but your low rpm will lose some of its "pep" and your gas mileage will suffer as well because of the retarted timing
