Unplug the MAF.... gain hp ?

OK, I know this sounds stupid.. because I thought it makes our car die and perform crappy (if it even runs) - buuut here is why I ask. My boy w/ a '99 SVT just had a ypipe and catback installed, and at the same time the shop was like "oh we will just disconnect your maf too for more hp"... they put it on the dyno, and he put down 13 more hp with it disconnected,... only problem with doing it that he sees, is if he is on it hard and lets off, it goes to like 300 rpm and bounces immediately back to idle...

would we see any gains ? would our car even run?

If you think a 2000 rpm limit is more hp, go for it.
