Knock Sensor?
A knock sensor senses "knock" or inefficient combustion in the chambers. If the fuel/air mixture within the cylinders is not completely burned it will cause knock. Improper timing and low octane can cause knock; the knock sensor detects this and tries to compensate. I don't think taking it off will increase your power levels, don't take it off of your car.

The knock sensor lets the ECU run as much ignition advance as possible. This gives you as much performance and fuel economy as possible. Without a knock sensor in the system, the car would either have to run very conservative timing (no fun at all), or just let the engine knock away (very bad for the engine).
This is why we love knock sensors...except when they fail...
