check engine light question- K&N filter?

WHats up? I just put in a used K&N cone filter I got from a friend. In doin so I had to disconnect what looked like a temperature sensing diode from my old box. Sure enough my check engine light came on as I was driving home. Can this be remedied at all? Has anyone had any experience with these cone filters?> He is selling it to me for $25 so i figured why not. Also, it seems like where the air usually comes in isnt connected to anything, so I dont see how this increses performance. MAybe someone could fill me in. I tried doin a search but couldnt find much. Also what is the MAF sensor and what is a K&N drop in? Thx in advance.

Make sure all the sensors are connected- and you should check the ECU for codes.
The intake increases performance by eliminating all the bends and long piping.
The MAF is the Mass Air Flow sensor measures the molecular mass of the incoming air, working together with the Intake Temperature Sensor to create precise fuel metering.
A K&N drop-in is a panel filter (like you stock one) but i think those are washable (not 100% sure)...
