someone with '95 FSM - need EGR help
I have been getting code 0302, EGR System. I have a Chilton's manual for '93-98 Maxima's, but it is only a partial help on figuring out the exact problem. I also have a '99 FSM on CD, but Nissan changed to an electric step motor driven EGR valve.
Here's my dilema. I have checked the EGR valve with a vacuum pump and it moves, but it won't work when connected to the car's system. I think that leaves me with either a bad EGR Backpressure Transducer Valve or a bad EGRC Control Solenoid Valve. It appears that the test procedures in the Chilton's are written around a 3rd gen emissions system.
Could someone send me the FSM test procedures (and exact locations) for the above two components? TIA

I don't have a 95, but I know someone who does (and also owns a FSM). I'll give him a call to get him to help you out.

Re: someone with '95 FSM - need EGR help
I scanned in a page from Haynes that gives some testing info:
EGR Control Solenoid and backpressure transducer
EGR Control Solenoid and backpressure transducer

Re: Re: someone with '95 FSM - need EGR help
I should also add that Haynes details the following CEL codes:
0302 EGR insufficient or excessive flow detected
0306 EGR backpressure transducer or circuit fault
0515 EGR valve or circuit
0514 EGR high flow detected
0305 EGR temp sensor or circuit fault
1005 EGR solenoid valve or circuit fault
0302 EGR insufficient or excessive flow detected
0306 EGR backpressure transducer or circuit fault
0515 EGR valve or circuit
0514 EGR high flow detected
0305 EGR temp sensor or circuit fault
1005 EGR solenoid valve or circuit fault

Thanks Mishmosh, I didn't think to look for other EGR error codes. Are these specifically for a '95? If so, I may indeed have a bad EGR valve because I am only getting code 0302.

That is strange that the EGR valve will work when tested with a vacuum pump but not in the car. You sure the EGR valve stem doesn't move when opening and closing throttle with the car in neutral--it should be vacuum driven. Make sure the vacuum line to the EGR valve is pulling manifold vacuum.

I've been getting that same error code for the past few months. I took it into autozone today to have them hook their machine to it and the CEL just went off by itself
the guy told me the code could mean problems with the EGR valve, oxygen sensors, and the Cat. Conv.
I just pray the CEL light doesn't come back on

At least you can diagnose your EGR problems. I have gotten ECU codes 1401 and 1405 from time to time, but have been unable to find out what the codes are $%^#$ Aparrantly the 14xx codes are 1999 specific. Now that I have my 1999 FSM I know that 1401 is EGR Temperature Sensor, but 1405 doesn't show up in the FSM.
I only have a vague understanding of the EGR system, but do you have any idea of what the EGR Temperature Sensor does? The Check Items says check: harness connectors, EGR Temp sensor, and malfunction of EGR function. There's also a lengthy check procedure that I guess I'll try out.

Well guys, here's an update. Back then, the only error code I was getting was 0302 "EGR insufficient or excessive flow detected". I reset the ECU and would get the error again after a day or two. After this happened 3 times, I decided to check it out, resulting in this post.
Well, I stroked the EGR valve with a vacuum pump, cleaned the solenoid electrical contacts with CRC cleaner and reset the ECU. One month and 2000 miles later, and I have not had the error code return. I suspect that there was carbon build up on the EGR valve and that it was either not seating or not moving all of the way; after all, it is 7 years old and has 100K miles on it.
Anyway, thanks to all who offered assistance.
