What Does The Button Do?

What Does The Button Do?
I'm still hunting for an owner's manual for my '97 Maxima, which is a great machine, and there's a button on the dash that is not labeled and I have no clue what it does.
The button is to the right of the dash lights dimmer control and you can click it to the right or the left. When it's clicked on the right, it lights up green, so I guess that's the on switch. At first I thought it was for my cruise control but that's on the left side of the steering wheel and it's marked.
If anyone in Magnificent Maximaland knows what this button does, please reply to this posting.
Thanks.

Thanks for the reply.
The gas door lever is down on floor, on the driver's side. Someone else replied that it may be connected to an alarm system, which was installed on the car prior to my purchasing it.
Your Max is beautiful, erty67. It looks just like mine, except I do have those nice rims. Are your pinstripes red and white?

Re: Do you have an alarm?
Thanks, DRU.
The car was equipped with an alarm prior to my purchasing it, but I got no information about it from the dealer. There is a sticker, with a phone number for a silent alarm system. I'll call the number and see if there's a connection.

HAHAHA!!! Sorry guys I couldn't keep that one in... that is indeed the cruise control power button. Mack your cruise functions are on the steering wheel, but they're useless if you don't hit that toggle switch to the left of the steering column first (power). I.E. if the little green light ain't on, yer cruise *shouldn't* work (have you ever tried it?)...
Anyway, there's a nifty mod that allows you to keep the light on constantly (without the mod it will reset to off when you turn off the engine and start it back up). The mod involves taking a relay out of the engine compartment and short-circuiting it with a wire. I've had mine modded for almost a year, and no problems yet. If you're interested, check the stickies or how-to's for the 4th-gens. If you can't find it, I can make you a write-up later this week when it *STOPS FRIGGIN" RAINING**** AAAARGH!!!!! Austin weather: no rain for 4 months, then rain 24-hours-a-day for like a week straight.

I have a 97 Canadian Max, with cold weather package...
and all I have is the cruise control and "security" on the left,
and the dimmer on the right (and a dummy slot)...I have LSD, but,
there's no switch...and, there is no traction control on 97s...
my $0.02...
Do you have pics? I'm sure that would help...

THE MYSTERY BUTTON
Thanks for all the replies, guys.
The car is being serviced to fix the cassette player and a few minor things and I did request they tell me what the button is for.
In my car, the button doesn't make any noise when pressed, nor does any cloud of smoke come from under the hood. I've played with it when the engine was on and when it was off.
I hope it is the cruise control override that Justin mentioned because that would be nice to have. Searching for that activation button on the left can be tedious. And he's right, your cruise control won't engage if the dash button isn't pressed. At first, I thought my cruise control didn't work, then I remembered how I used it when I had my '98 Altima.
Once I get something official, I'll let the forum know.
Thanks again for all the info.

Altho this would set off your alarm, you put the key into the ignition turn and then press the "ghost switch" to turn off the alarm. You can also program your alarm using this button. If it's not that... then sorry, i'm not sure what it could be. Just follow the wires and see where they lead...

Well, if that was the case, I would hope he would have said "I have a blank panel on the left". But he didn't. I'm going on 'what is', not 'what if'.

I'm surprised no one with an I30 responded to this. In my 98 I30t, that button you are talking about is the cruise control switch. Mayb the guy before hand thought he would fill up an empty slot with the I30 CC switch? If i move the switch to a side, i forgot which side, it turns green, and on your dash, a green light should say "cruise" when the switch is on. I am sorry if my information overlapped anyone else's because it too early for me to be reading Hope this helped.
